It was one of the last nice days of the season- the sun was bright and warm and Gypsum’s pale coat was soaking it up. It was so lovely to be able to sunbathe in the autumn rays one last time before the bite of winter. The nice day seemed to be putting her, and her herd mates, in a good mood! Even Muertos, who had been a bit cold since her arrival, seemed to be enjoying herself. Gypsum wasn’t sure she’d ever seen the dark mare smile before!
Dove was busy playing with Olive, and Muertos seemed to be staring off in the distance as was usual. It was such a nice day that she didn’t want to waste it just grazing! Her eyes scanned across her herd mates again before landing on Leander. The pale, painted stallion stood at the crest of the hill, grazing by his lonesome but keeping a close eye on the four of them. Gypsum tilted her head as she looked at him. He was always so tense, as if he expected an army of bachelors to jump out and steal them all away. Perhaps he could use some cheering up!
Making up her mind, she broke into an easy lope to join his side. His head lifted lazily as she approached, giving her a suspicious glance.
“It’s a beautiful day, isn’t Leander?” she started, offering him a smile. He stared at her for a minute before snorting and returning to his grass. The young mare faltered for only a minute. Maybe he just wasn’t a fan of small talk?
“I was thinking maybe we could go on a walk? I would hate to waste such a nice day standing around,” she tried again, gently bumping his shoulder with her nose. The stallion gave her a side eye before taking on a peculiar expression. Gypsum recognized it to be a “scheming” look as Dove had put it once. Maybe he was actually considering her offer?
He nodded and led the way away from the herd. She almost couldn’t hide her surprise! The two made their way towards the tree line that surrounded the little valley they resided in. It was only once they had entered the shade of the trees that he looked back at her and smiled.
“It’s nice to be able to spend one on one time with you like this,” he crooned, the corners of his mouth curling up into a smile. Gypsum grinned back and nodded. “I know! You’ve been so busy recently, but I think things are finally going to get better now that things have calmed down,”
Leander chuckled, his voice a gentle and warm sort. Yet despite the warmth in his voice and the smile on his face, it didn’t quite reach his eyes. Her instincts whispered that something was wrong, but she shook it off. Leander was her lead stallion. She was safe with him!
“I’ve been meaning to ask you something..” he started, approaching her. His head was low and non threatening, and she was grateful. She had never been so close to a stallion like this. He continued speaking, but the words were nothing more than a droning noise to her ears as he closed the distance between them.
She stood like a deer in the headlights, frozen in place as he moved around her, speaking words that her head just couldn’t seem to focus on enough to make sense of. It wasn’t until his muzzle reached out for her flank that she jumped, springing away from him. A nervous sort of laugh bubbled up from somewhere in her chest, spilling from her lips.
“Leander? What kind of game is this?” She asked nervously, offering him a smile. Her instincts chanted for her to get out of dodge.
Her stallion was no longer smiling.
Run
He was stepping closer to her.
Run
He was lunging at her.
Run!
She turned tail and fled from him, panic taking hold of her young body and pushing her back towards her herd. She burst from the tree line, a fearful whinny escaping her as she ran back to the other mares. There was a drumming in her ears… Was it blood? Adrenaline? Or was is the stallion behind her. Was he catching up?!
Muertos jumped as she heard Gypsum’s shrill cry. She wheeled around, searching for the young mare, and spotted her tearing across the valley towards. Her ears went askew, searching for the cause of her terror, when she spotted Leander in hot pursuit. Dread filled her limbs and rage filled her mind.
With a bellow, she charged towards the pair. Her legs ate up the ground beneath her and within minutes she was past Gypsum and standing firm before the pale stallion. He attempted to stop far too late, his hooves sliding in the grass like it was ice, and the two collided. For a moment, Muertos could feel no pain. She did not feel his teeth in her hide. She did not feel her hooves connect with his barrel. She did not hear their screams. She just felt determined rage. She would tear him limb from limb before she would let him chase after another mare like he had Gypsum. She had never felt hatred like this.
She would’ve ripped him apart if it weren’t for the hoof that connected with her head, cutting into the skin just above her eye. She stumbled backwards, rage turning to shock and shock melting away into a raging pain. Her mind scrambled to figure out what had happened before she was body checked and sent head first into the grass. She landed hard. She gasped to catch her breath, her mind in a daze.
Bleary eyed, she blinked up into the blinding sky. Slowly, her eyes and ears refocused. She rolled onto her side, snorting. She was startled to see blood exhaled along with air, and she rubbed her muzzle along her leg, staring at the smears that were left behind. She was pulled out of shock when she heard someone yell.
“You promised!”
In front of her stood Dove, the silver mare’s ears pinned to her skull. She stood steadfast like a stone wall between her and Leander. Behind her, her filly cowered with fear.
“You promised you would leave her alone!” The gray mare screamed, voice hoarse with anger.
“You know what I want, and I intend to get it one way or another-”
“You’ll get your child! You knew that you would once Olive was grown, it was part of our agreement-”
“I don’t care about that anymore. I intend on having a foal, and one of you are going to give me one. So who’s it going to be?” Leander snapped, advancing on Dove. Horror overtook Dove’s expression and she stumbled away from him, hurrying Olive away from him.
“No volunteers? Because I’m happy to make the decision for you all,” The stallion wheeled around on his mares, looking at each of them, waiting for a response. Fear overtook Muertos’, its claws sinking deep into her chest. It was ice cold and left her legs feeling numb.
“Fine-”
“I will.”
Silence followed her proclamation. Even she couldn’t believe the words that had just left her mouth. But she knew that she couldn’t let it be Gypsum, and Dove was still nursing Olive. She couldn’t let anyone else be hurt by him.
“Smart decision, mare. Maybe you aren’t completely worthless after all,” he said, neck arched proudly. Muertos slowly climbed to her hooves, her body and instincts all screaming in protest. She slowly approached him, head low. She could feel the gaze of the other mares following her every step. It felt as though she was walking towards her own execution.
She joined his side as he turned to head off towards the forest.
“After you,” he said.
