The first few days with Devi had been...different. She followed after his heels like a lost puppy, eyeing the world as though she had never seen it before. She seemed to like coming up right behind his back hooves, which startled him more times than not. It took quite a bit of self control to not instinctively kick out at her when she poked her head through his long tail, giving him that big smile of hers.
Although he kept up a perpetually grumpy façade, he could feel the little filly worming her way into his heart. He had expected her to whine and cry more, but instead she insisted on following him around and learning how to be a 'big, tough lead stallion'. He didn't have the heart to tell her that she was neither a stallion nor that her chances of becoming a lead were extremely low. Instead, he taught her the things he knew; how to detect differences between scents, incoming changes in weather, and where to best hide during a particularly bad storm were just a few of things he tried to pass on to her. He was startled at everything she seemed to soak up and remember.
The pair were walking through a snow-laden forest, their hooves crunching on the snow covered banks of the river. Devi froze just a few steps before Caine, causing him to stop in surprise.
"What is that, Caine?" Devi asked, tilting her head towards something half buried under snow on the other side of the river bank. He saw something metal, with lots of rust and round circular things on either end. Next to it was some long planks of wood, with long metal rods on either side. Caine eyed the thing warily before nudging Devi forward.
"I'm not sure. Just keep moving," He mumbled, keeping a close eye on the thing in case it decided to lunge out at them.
