I made this for Anthrocon but never got the chance to photograph it and upload it. I was working literally up to the last minute. I did most of it in the two days before we left for the con.

It didn't sell, but I'm rather glad, because I wanted to get some pictures and also possibly work on it some more. Also, I didn't get to spend much time with it before I handed it over to a new owner Now I can.

I think expect more sculpture in the future. It's entertaining to me and a nice break from illus. stuff.

It was an oven bake clay; I think supersculpy? The tan-colored one. And the paint is oil.

Oh thank you! I have some supersculpy and was having some real trouble with molding it due to its stiffness. Do you have any tips for making it more playable?

If you are serious about sculpting you could get one of those pasta machines people use for sculpy. It's the fastest and easiest way to mix and soften up really stiff clay. Otherwise you just have to work it in your fingers until it's warmer and pliable. You could try putting it in warm, but not hot, water. You could also mix a little rubbing alcohol in if you want a softer overall clay, though this will make holding really tight detail more difficult. Super sculpy is so stiff for just that reason--high detail.

I've seen that technique before, the pasta one. It seems effective... but tedious. I'm used to using water-based clay.

Super sculpy is awesome for detailing, but what good is detailing if you can't even get the form right? Haha.

I think I will check out some softer sculpy. That might be my problem.

Thanks for your help!

I've found that doing the form in a softer sculpey or epoxysculpt, hardening it, and then doing detail work on top is very effective.

Okay.... obviously you used polymer clay, but I'm think you used paint, and I'm wondering what kind?
Last time I tried to paint a polymer statue........

Have you a "skeleton" of wire first and then sculpted it? Or do you just began sculpting?(I don't know how to say it in a better way, sorry. hope you understand what I mean )

hibbary In reply to SockenobsessiveXD [2008-10-28 22:02:21 +0000 UTC]

No, not at all :3 It's a polymer clay, which means oven baked. It doesn't explode the same way ceramics do.

This is beautiful work, I'm really surprised it didn't sell O.o. Well, now that it's had some DA exposure I'll bet the buyers won't be able to get to your table fast enough next time . How much were you asking for it, if you don't mind my inquiring?

Looking forward to seeing more of your sculpture - it shows of your well-rounded art powers beautifully .
