Description Portrait of my older son at age four. Photo reference was my own, taken on a trip to the zoo.

Rendered with H--4B graphite pencils, with black layout pencil for the darkest shadows.

I chose the title because his wistful look reminded me that he will be a man someday, with something important to accomplish with his life.

Yeah, isn't that a cheery face he has for a smile.

You are so good at this! I hope to see more children in pencil by you. capturing children and having them still look like children is so hard.

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, I love pencil (though I am going digital to make cover art).

He often has that look in his eyes... He has a very serious and literal mind, and this photo (though I certainly have a lot of others) seemed to capture that bit of personality. I am happy you like it!

oh my...what a BEAUTIFUL work....indeed his look is advanced and mature beyond his years at the time...the light you've captured is supremely stunning. The brightness can only hint and suggest at the brightness of his future. I feel this is what you wanted to convey in the artwork? Those eyes are beautiful spiritual pools of depth and focus. Such a special work!

GloriaDei In reply to Tahnja [2011-11-21 02:38:06 +0000 UTC]

It is special to me, as much as or more than the portrait of my brother. The light was simply the best I could find in my collection of photos, but it fits with the title (and my feelings about the piece as I was working on it).
My son just turned five, and already his face has altered and grown. But the drawing still represents him and his thoughtful, serious soul.

I can feel the emotion and heart in the work so easily my friend....and that's what I love so much about it, the heart, depth and sincerity of love is so real and tangible

I skipped a lot of the details from the photo (his hair was in need of cutting at the time) and picked out the ones that looked the best to draw. Thanks for liking my work!

GloriaDei In reply to SeaSpryte [2011-11-17 20:54:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks--I like to shade without blending tools. On this one I used the H pencil a lot to blend lighter values together.

SeaSpryte In reply to GloriaDei [2011-11-18 00:11:59 +0000 UTC]

Well it's lovely. But why not use the blending tools? Does it make things easier?
"Q-tips" are my tool for choice right now.

GloriaDei In reply to SeaSpryte [2011-11-18 01:46:18 +0000 UTC]

It's probably harder to achieve the desired effect without blending tools, actually. But I like to lay down the values directly from the pencil, instead of smudging graphite around that's already there. It's just my preference, what I've always been comfortable with. It feels like painting rather than drawing when I use blending tools (and I do occasionally, like on "Special" when I just couldn't get it to look right without a Q-Tip).

I know what you mean.
i just found out how to use the smudging tools though, and I'm having fun with them. It sort of feels like magic when I smudge the pencil and get this lovely smooth texture that seems to undulate with shape. Can you tell I'm lovin' the smudgin'?

GloriaDei In reply to SeaSpryte [2011-11-19 06:27:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the encouragement. I really ought to master the tools to achieve better art, as you say. Though I have no idea where my art is going in the future... I love graphite because I always used it, but colored pencil is richer, and digital art is a brand new world. What media do you like best? (I notice you do photography too--something else I've recently discovered is fun).

Oh my goodness - I love it all!
Photography is fun - almost instant gratification, and then I play on iPhoto and picnik.com (have you seen that site?). I've been thinking of trying HDR (check out stuckincustoms.com 'cause he's got some great pictures - and because I teach, I can get a discount on the HDR software that he talks about. I'm thinking of getting it today actually. I even started a stock account so that I could have an excuse to point and shoot everything around me. he he

And then my sister is a fabulous artist . She got me interested in this last year. I hadn't picked up a pencil to draw in years. But the artists here are SO inspirational, so I started. I'm trying to experiment with all types of art now (I feel like a kid in a candy store). Watercolors are a bit annoying to me at this point - I can't get the control I want. But I think I'm lovin' watercolor pencils! And of course pencils (it's fun shading with them). I didn't even know the different uses of the pencil different hardnesses until a few months ago.

And then there is digital art... I just got a tablet and Photoshop Elements... sigh...
