Firstly, your work with the background the dragon is standing on is well-defined. Looks like actual rocky-mountains. The mountains further out behind him, though, could use some of the same detail. Looks like you took your pencil and sketched them out, while doing some light shading.
I'm curious as to how you were so successful with the scales in this piece. They're accurate, except for maybe not really looking like they're "flexing" with his muscle structure. For example, the scales running along his wings, when they come to the corners of the wings, look somewhat like they're "plastered", and unable to move with the dragon's body. BUT, the scales running along his body have the opposite effect, looking very natural and smooth.
Anatomy is HARD with animals, especially dragons. It took me A LONNG time before I was able to understand anatomy of ANY creature. His arms and wing structure are really the only concerns I have. Arms look a bit thin on the backside of the one that's bent, and there's no "joint" in the wings, making them look stiffened.
But the detail you poured into this was fantastic all in all, but learning muscle structures in the arms and wings can make the piece look even MORE alive! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Thank you for your critique!
And yes I spent a lot less time on the distant mountains, mainly because they are so far away they would not need to much detail.
The effect of the flowing scales probably is down to me changing the way I did them. The ones on the body are flowing and are arrow shaped, I made sure that they overlapped each other. The ones going onto the arms are just circles, and I think I did that in order to cover more ground more quickly. Thanks for pointing that out, it has proved that the other type of scale works better
I see what you mean with the bent arm, and as for the wings, the elbow joint is covered by the overlapping, however, I did choose to leave out further joints on the phalanges, mainly because I find that they make the wing look too heavy and articulated for flight.
Thanks again for your feedback, it was very useful

The Shades and detail are amazing, did you go to an art school or are you just self taught?

The wing material (membrane or "skinning") is really interesting presentation.

you did a really great job on the details! the scales look great. The details on the wings are a bit too much in my opinion though.

VERY good! Great anatomy work, and the scale details are perfect. The tail is the best part, and you gave the beast lovely horns.

This dragon is pretty neat, and nicely done with the lines..
However, it does kind of look *alot* like this piece which is owned by someone else: [link]
