The cards you get for free can be sold for an amount of points, but are still free.
a determined person can then easily abuse this function and earn points quickly...

That exploit should not exist in the latest version - 1.3.
If you installed deviantCARD prior to the 1st of June, this exploit is existent, however 1.2.5 and lower versions will be extirpated when the time comes. Currently 1.2.5 is available as a fallback in the event that 1.3 should exhibit undesirable glitches potentially rendering deviantCARD unusable.
I don't believe that cheating should be a problem quite yet, however, as there is still a relatively small audience using deviantCARD and I trust them for the most part.

No, it's a points system (not linked to deviantART). You start off with 1000 points (or $1000) and you earn points daily and by investing in the right cards. Don't worry, it won't use a $ sign in the next update, since I understand that's misleading.

Where you prompted to install it into Google Chrome after downloading? If not, you may have missed Chrome's confirmation at the bottom of the page (it requires confirmation to open extensions from websites other than Google's).
Also, because many people have tried this: it won't work with Firefox

It'll only work on Google Chrome (which is a different web browser). Chrome uses the same layout engine as Safari (webkit), however is considerably simpler and faster and handles extensions differently. If you ever decide to switch browsers, I recommend Google Chrome for its overall performance and since this extension works exclusively on it.

Also, you should see a collect/buy button at the top right of members' profiles on deviantART and there should be a yellow/green button at the top right of the omnibar that'll open your collection when you click it once you've collected at least one card.

It's the same as buying a card. I didn't made the text change to Update - it'll be fixed in the next update. Just try to buy a card you already own and it'll say that it's been updated for free. You must be able to afford it first, though - this will also be fixed in the next update.

I like the idea of having the user's status affect the value of the card. Personally here's how I think it should work out:
~ : no change.
* and = : adds to deviance.
` : adds to defense.
$ : adds to power.
° : adds one level and power.
£ : adds to rank and deviance.
And for users like #ArtBIT , lolly , and -Yay-I-Broke-It who don't have 'standard' symbols then their cards' values should be raised by $2500.

I've considered using symbols and a number of other things to change stats, but right now I'm working on certain features I've been needed to add or a while. I may do something with symbols in the future, though.
And yes, I have had the idea to use groups as "power-up" cards or something to that effect

I recently completed a built-in guide for new users and I'm working on making it give new users their cards as soon as they open their collections. Also have some major script changes (not really noticeable by users) and a smaller features such as sorting cards and style tweaks.
Also, I don't plan to add pages since they're not really deviants.

ATK and DEF are a percentage of total deviance; the larger being determined by certain deviantART stats which best relate to each.

Everything is determined using deviantART statistics such as pageviews, comments, and deviations. The price uses pretty much the same formula as deviance, except deviance is normalized using logarithms.
