What's hilarious is that I seem to have made a pact with myself to use a semicolon every three paragraphs. It's like, I can't go without one.
Hehehe I bet you thought I was going to use a semicolon in this post! Well, you're wrong!
This is the true anti-humor. ;D

So true. Poor semicolons and their underuse; commas can't do what semicolons can!!!!

Correct usage of punctuation would be well advised; semicolons, for example, are often misused.

They're so often needed, however, where commas are mistakingly placed; such a waste.

Perhaps the inability to use semicolons is, to some extent, the fault of teachers; if they do not know, their students will not learn from them. Then again, after having been lectured on it, many students with whom I had taken a writing class were still unable to correctly use semicolons; unfortunately, it is probable that they never will know the correct usage of that impeccable piece of punctuation.

Truthfully, there are many situations in which it can be used, and is often interchangeable with commas. Where you use it is really up to you; whether it be to connect a relevant fragment or whole sentence when fitting. At least it'll always have one unquestionable use: dividing lists containing objects containing commas.

Your repetition of the word "containing" is displeasing to my mind; indeed, so disturbing is it that forever it shall remain in my memory.

Repetition is a technique used for emphasis - not a fault.

In this case, it appears to be an ineffective technique.
By the way, your hyphen should have been either a semicolon or a dash.

In the eyes of the beholder only.
Also, a semicolon can only connect a clause which contains a noun and verb; and "-" was used as a dash as the typed symbol is both interchangeable and is used laxly during such trivial conversations as these.

Forgive me my error as you would have me forgive your stylistic device, and lead us not into Proto-Germanic, but deliver us from Latin.

I agree, although I have an annoying habit of using dickinson-dashes in place of semicolons.

So true! But, when do you actually use a semi-colon? (Never understood that one...)

Semicolons have multiple uses. Their most common use would probably be separating items in a list which have commas in them. For example: periods, used for statements; question marks, used to ask a question; and exclamation points, used to emphasize a precautionary statement.
Another use may be to connect a complete thought to a related incomplete thought; my favorite use.

Ahh, now I know why I overuse commas... I often use them when you could use a semi-colon instead...
