I have to say I'm making Shikamaru look more and more evil with each drawing. Ah well. This was originally for a contest that said all you had to do was draw a Naruto character training in the summer... but seeing as there's no way to tell that it's summer, (in fact it's all gloomy. Could be near winter for all I know) it fails big time.I had a lot of fun doing the evil shadow thingy - the smudge tool is awesome for doing this sort of thing. Trees took forever, and I'm not particularly pleased with how they turned out... more an issue of placement more than anything else though. Obviously I still have a lot to learn about doing backgrounds.
Also, I suck at drawing hands.

Great work, the shadows are very detailed and produce a nice visual effect. Th trees are okay, love the posture of Shimkamaru, it's the same he uses for thinking ^^.

Yeah, I was hoping to get his "thinking posture" but couldn't find a page from the manga to reference from. Hopefully it still conveyed the right feeling, though!

Well he's had crazy-shadow fights in the manga as well, I remember... though perhaps they weren't so oppressive-looking.

Hey you. I like how this turned out ^^ The shadow effects are very nice and the trees have a simple, sketchy feel to them. I like them a lot ^-^ I always love how you turn the Naruto characters into your own style. THey always look so cool :3 THe black and white colouring is great. I think, overall, this is a very great drawing !

Thanks for the compliments! In all honesty, I can't really draw Naruto characters in Kishimoto's style (well, perhaps without tracing them). But even if I could, where would the fun be in that?

Thanks! It's nice doing color, but for doing things like trees sometimes it's just nice to use bigger black brush sizes, with broad strokes. It's fun~

Your hands are getting better!
I would say one problem right now is you're not getting the wrist-to-hand connection right, so you're hand size and placement is a bit off.
Try looking at some pics on the internet, or just your own arm, to see that connection. It makes proportions easier.

Yeah, I know it's a bit screwed up. I was looking for one of the original manga panels where Shikamaru is in a somewhat similar stance but I couldn't find it and decided to wing it... I'll still try to improve in the future~

I think it's really good, of course I'm really not a great artist to be judging others. But in my opinion it's pretty good. He does look a bit on the "evilesque" side, but hey...pissy/evil could be the same thing depending on how it's viewed. lol.

I don't think anyone has to be a 'good' artist to decide whether or not they like a piece... just go with what your eyes tell you! I had his eyes closed originally but I didn't like the look, and as soon as I drew them open they just looked sullen. Not exactly the feeling I wanted, but I guess it works?

I personally think it works. It seems to have the "I really do not want to be here" feeling to it, which is totally Shikamaru.
As the artist of the piece, I'm sure you can see a lot more of the flaws than anyone else...but I think it's good.

Thanks! At first the shadow was just a big blob until I thought of using the smudge tool on it, which really brought it to life.
