Also, stay away from port towns around New England.

Curious - the Elder Things colonized many worlds other than earth -but on all those worlds, the shoggoths have stayed harmless. It's only on Earth that they went -twisted. They developed brains, became vicious and rebellious, and perhaps were a factor in the disappearance of the Elder Things on Earth.
The Elder Things weren't our friends either...

How do we know how Shoggoths behaved on other planets?

The Elder Things engraved their history on the walls of their buildings and they indicated that the shoggoths became intractible on earth, and indirectly stated that this has not happened elsewhere. The Elder Things didn't like to use machinery, but at one point, they fell back on machines to do the work the now cranky and vicious shoggoths refused to do.

According to these wall-carvings, described in "AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS" ,the Kadathian mountains roared into the sky in one night, and, after that, the shoggoths became REALLY intractible. The carvings showed the unsettling way lightning would play about the tallest of those evil mountains, and how the elder ones ran howling from certain -objects- washed down from those evil heights.
Gedney glimpsed what lay beyond those peaks as they made their escape by airplane -and was never sane again !

Best depiction of a Shoggoth I've seen. I can imagine this slowly rising up, before exploding forth in a torrent of chaos! Other illustrations which attempt to show the Shoggoth in its full, wild, chaotic state all seem a bit underwhelming.

I really like the simplicity of this one.

I really like the linework and contrast. Nice form and fine style. Subtle and creepy at the same time.
