Description fursona and artwork (c) foxstory 2013

The edge of the storm is not just the rain slicing through the atmosphere to collide with the earth below. It's also the edge, or cliff line, seen in the background. My fursona has come to this remote part of the forest so as to be able to view the vast expanse of rain upon terrain from the promontory. Seeing the exposed rocky surfaces and the areas of dirt that will soon become mud, you'd best hope he not slip while investigating the view. I used an all-new technique for rain here: circular rain drops spattered all around, followed by a strong vertical motion blur. As for my fursona's fox anatomy, I'm hoping I've gotten a fairly realistic portrayal here. I've not detailed fur tufts through shading since the darkness of the tempest and its precipitation all around would likely soak the fur right through. Solid fur colors with highlight and shading will have to do. I really like rainstorms!

I feel like this is the first "speed" paint that I've done in quite some time. Estimated time spent: 3-4 hours

I like this especially the background and lighting, it does look like a watercolour painting! The rain has a nice soft effect (I'm useless at painting rain, must give it a try soon)

I think one thing you could do is make the fur look a little wet, however I'm not actually entirely sure how to do that myself to be honest!

anyway looks great, keep it up!

For painting rain, I've found two methods I like.  One is the repeated long angled strokes as I draw each rain streak in nearly a straight line, often given a generic blur at the end.  More recently, I dotted my canvas with many circles of varying sizes on a single layer.  They were all close to white, and I set pen pressure to control size for the variance.  Then, I used motion blur (a photoshop cs4 feature) to blur them along a near vertical path in this picture.

I suppose I could have shaded it darker or in clumps of fur to show the wet aspect.  Thanks for your comment!

That's a neat trick! I haven't tried painting rain for a long time, last time I used the "wind" filter in photoshop combined with some other things and it worked well

Wow, i love the background in this! it looks almost like watercolour, and the bright rocks give it a boost of brighter colour. I really like the effect of the rain too, it creates a soft feel and isn't overly. Your anatomy has definitely improved from when I first looked at your art, it's coming along well!

I would say, with the shading on the fox compared to the background, would you ever consider going with a more soft shade? True, his fur would be wet, but with the shading you could make the darkness slightly more ridged and not as uniform. And also, just a thought but have you ever considered using coloured shading? It looks great with the dark outline but if you ever want the fox to not stick out as much you should try it!

Great work though, you keep improving more and more!

This is one of the most detailed comments I've received.  I used a number of Photoshop CS4 filters, including watercolor.  I neglected to use the ridges in shading fur, and I think that may have been related to using such a hard shading technique.  It does seem reasonable that the shading would be varied or ridged and not a uniform line as I've depicted.  I've experimented with color shading in the past, but I didn't think to use it here.

Thank you!  Comments like yours are one of the most rewarding things about improvement.
