I created another ring of four winds. this time i worked out all the kinks. the only problem is I don’t have a good polisher so the tool marks do show but I have gotten better so they are not too obvious.

Oh and a funny note. for the background i just took one of my sports plaques and fliped it over and used it. sadly it is actually not marble it is wood.

This is the old one [Ring of Four Winds]

tell me what you think.

love the story on your choice of backgrounds for your photo. It's proof that you're a real artist. I like how you rounded the ends of the wire on the swirls. Here's a few tips on polishing: a nail file for acrylic nails (the sandpaper variety are too rough) works great to knock out any deep marks in the metal. Most woodworking stores (and even Lowes or Home Depot) sell high grit sandpaper (1200-2000) to smooth it out further. then you can use a polishing cloth or burnishing tool to get a good shine.

I like how you attached the onyx! It looks like it's floating between the wires. Good job!

They have a rubber dip you can dip your pliers into but it wears off and you have to reapply it.

Myself, I filed all the teeth off my pliers and smoothed the rough edges. A drawback is they are now slippery and it takes practice handling slippery pliers. I could re coat them with the plastic dip but meh.. they are ok.

Also, nylon jaw pliers help but they are limited in shape and the nylon wears quickly.

Also, hard silver is harder to work with than soft. Soft can be lightly hammered or tumbled (minus the stone) once it's shaped to harden the wire.

You did a great job!

This is really a nifty design. I'm jealous of how even your twist is with 3 strands.

all you need is a clamp and a pencil. either that or a hand drill

Aha. I always have one wire pull too tight and mess up the look.

This is a nice improvement on the first ring! I love the way you caught the onyx bead in there, it looks almost suspended. Also, it is nice that the twisted part comes a little closer to the swirls.

what kind of tools are you working with? is there a way you could cover them so they don't leave marks? (I use regular pliers covered in several layers of masking tape and they don't leave marks most of the time) although on this one the marks aren't even noticeable (compared to the other) unless you point them out.

i recently started to use masking tape and i used it on this one. i actually used flat square nose pliers for this and clamped on the side and twisted. clamped hard

if you don't want the mark to show, use nylon jaw pliers. they won't mar your wire.

and heavy marks show more if you're working with hard wire. use only dead soft to make curves and if possible anneal your dead soft wire first so they become even softer. then they would be easier to form and your pliers won't leave as many marks.

using the correct tools will help you getting the looks you want. use round nose pliers to create swirls.

and with more experience you'll get the hang of your tools and will eventually know the correct pressure to use.

i personally don't mind pliers marks on wire cos well, that shows the "handmade" side. it could be artistic looking too sometimes

keep up the good work!
