A painting for my book, Underwing.

This spirit is a Dagu, a Keeper of death known to the creatures of the forest, Vawkuu. The spirits of this grove, or ghosts as they are also called, are charged with keeping order in the universe. The Dagu are indeed thought to be harvesters of those about to meet their fate.

Jeiokha's guardian is a Dagu who takes the form of a mighty Emporer-sized crow. Though a death keeper, Jeiokha learns about his protector more deeply and sees that he is firm, but caring by nature.

Strangely enough, Jeiokha is a personification of life and youth and energy.

It is the Crow Dagu in the story, Underwing, who is the first to symbolize protection and shelter, which are key to the book's themes. He isn't given a name in the book, but he has one. It simply hasn't been revealed yet, not even to Jeiokha.
