Description

The Knights of the Livonian Order are depicted routing the field following a conference. They were invited by representatives of Novogrod to attend a debate named "Christianity – Religion of Peace". The heated debate led to disagreements on three points: 1. Who is more peaceful, Novogrod or the Livonian Order 2. which group obeys the true will of God 3. which cross shape is better. This in turn led to a battle and centuries of armed conflict. The debate is considered to have been won by Novogrod, leading by approximately 7000 kills.

Sadly, in the 1940s - The descendants of the Order started a much more nasty argument, that led to millions dead and decades of darkness.

I like your attention to detail in historical accuracy in their armor, that's hard to come by these days, most people go for the overly impractical fantasy that would make no sense in real life. My only issue would be the weapons, swords would essentially be useless against this kind of armor, they should be using poleaxes, Halberds, maces, warhammers, spears, lances & pikes.

I'm watching you now my man (or dame)

Knights did not wear those great helmets on the battlefield should a crossbowman need a full shirt of chain mail armor as he is giving chase.

TheDoomslayer93 In reply to HoaryStar [2019-05-22 21:54:14 +0000 UTC]

They actually did wear them, they are called Great Helms & were used around the period of the Crusades, full plate armor was not available at the time, so they would mostly use mail & gambeson & maybe a surcoats.

I understand that great helms were more decorum minded, perhaps worn for the tournaments, not on the battlefield.Β  What you relate beneath this phase, already about battlefield state of the art perfected warrior elite's armor?Β

Given the whole thing requires a gradual evolution.

I wouldn't say they wenren't worn at all, that's pretty much their "high tech" armor at the time, visivility was an issue, as it was with most helms of the period & I understand that heat was also an issue in the Middle East, but if they could use it, belive me, they would; it is much more prefferable to have dificulty with the temperature than to have your head caved in by a mace or a polearm; there is historical evidence of people using these helms in battle, not just in tournaments, granted, not everyone could afford them, but the ones that could would used them.

I have read that they are not functional battle helmets, even though the visor helms as the bascinet and the salade from the 14th century come to render the old battle helmets obsolete.

Nothing to do with weather, only safe to wear for a tournament.

The knight is equipped with a separate functional battle helmet outside of the pageantry.

The campaign was won by the Teutons. The native population of the Baltic faced centuries of oppression, much like overseas colonies. And did not gain independence until 1989.

No. The Order of Knights Tectonic is shrouded in secrecy to such an extent, that many historians do not even realise they existed. I would love to depict Tectonic knights one day. Sadly, two things prevent me from doing that, lack of free time and the aforementioned secrecy. It is virtually impossible to find visual references, since nobody knows what they looked like.Β
This illustration depicts Teutonic knights.

War is a human condition. It will always be with us regardless. Peaceful religion has been used to justify conflict throughout history. I just happens. So if you want to stand behind Christian warriors in this instance stand with the Eastern Orthodox knights cutting down the Teutonics.
