Description Watercolors,
32 x 44cm

Originally called Ivanhoe - Dogfights in Torquilstone, but sadly that was too long for deviantArt...

So as that original title tells, it's an illustration based on Sir Walter Scotts Ivanhoe.

Very short explanation:
The Templar in the middle and two of his companions (not depicted here) kidnapped a group of travelers. Robin Hood and his companions (guys dressed green) are now trying to free them and therefor besiege the castle where the group is held prisoner. After the outlaws managed to get into the castle, the Templar tries to flee with one of the victims of the hijacking, the young Lady Rebekka (left to the Templar on the Saracen's horse).

I'm not sure if I have commented on this piece before, but if I haven't, then shame on me. Because I love this and I don't get tired of looking at it. The first time I saw this was many months before I read Ivanhoe, and then just recently I read it this autumns so now I have the proper context with which to view this painting. As so many others have said, the level of detail is astounding. I'm a fan of tiny details so I like to look at them particularly. Speaking of which, I absolutely love Bois-Guilbert's saddles decoarations, how you put the cross in there and the padded seat and everything. I love the decorations on the hem of Rebecca's dress. The sheen on each helmet and the detail on all of the backs of the shields with period-accurate buckles and straps and belts is just awesome; and I also love the obvious time and painstaking research you put into this making sure everything was historically accurate. As one with a tenacious inner-historical stickler, I appreciate that a lot.

And I am still in awe of how you did the sky and the smoke.

One quick question, is that DeBracy I see way in the back, with the black and red surcoat?

Also: BRIAN DE BOIS-GUILBERT!!!!!

Sorry for the delay in my respinse, I have been away from dA for some time...

Thanks so much for your comment. I am glad you like all the details. I love to see details in paintings and illustrations! Yes it took a lot of time to research and do some studies and sketches, but I had fun putting all those details in here.

*Mafeo probably summed it up best with his comments; only I wouldn't know one paint(er's) brush from the next.

The technique, and or, techniques that he was trying to acquire just by looking at this piece for so long have also had me wondering just what is possible with this medium of watercolours in the hands of a masterful artist.

I think the reasons why I've been looking at it for a whiles now is mostly because there is so much going on in it.

I'm not so keen on the horses being so little protected with their thinly covered caparisons, but that's only because I am currently interested in horse armour, and I've been noticing a lot of that kind of thing lately.

Thank you so very much!

I love watercolors for everything is possible with them

Ahh well horse armor...well they besieged templars in the castle didn't have the time to armor them while they had to defend their castle

I love how you incorporated the traditional depiction of these kinds of battles. there's so much chaos going on and every person in the picture weems to have his own little story line.

Very impressive work: all of those fighters have an interesting posture and even some have a facial expression: you can actually feel their rage, the fighting, protecting themselves...
