Description Another Wheel of Time Series Character...Galad Damodred. My hope was to capture him as a non-feminine looking badass that looks like he can kick butt. This entire painting was 100% imagination. I used a reference for the face, but that is about it. The armor was challenging to paint but I stuck with it and I am somewhat happy with the design and turn out. Enjoy and look out for my next WoT character painting!

Some of my other WoT character paintings so far in the order they were pianted...

Here are some stages of the painting process I captured for those interested....

p.s. I am open to constructive feedback back and ideas on every piece I have worked on or am working on. If you see something wrong with a painting of mine please point it out to me so i can learn from my mistakes! Thank you!!

Edit: Made the beard much less darker since it seemed to be taking away from the character instead of adding to it.

well as far as Badd ass is concerned you need to make him more of a bad ass he looks more like a pretty boy. try adding some wear and tear on his face like a scaring or the "battle fatigue"

But hold every thing ... Woooooww I mean you did all of this from imagination you must really been burning brain cells ... e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h… " width="15" height="13" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="357" title="Heart"/> ... Awesome.

Interestingly I like the metal highlights the specularity and details on the armor. for future add more detail on the Armour like add ons etc ie pscis on the gauntlet aka gloves and spikey lower arm pads

Thanks for the critique! He is no where near as pretty as he is meant to be in the books. I tried pushing the bounds on how rough and manly I could make him look without losing the original intent

I agree about the armor. It does require more details.

GaladΒ΄s painting! First of all i really like the artists vision! Galad looks a little different from the description in the books and his skin i always thought it a little fair, but By his expression and by the fantastic Children in the background i can quite feet this picture has taken in the upfront of the Last Battle!
The artistΒ΄s originality really shows in this draw, has in the other ones in the series! The technique is awsome has usual, tho itΒ΄s a little blurry and the armour and cape still lacks a little definition, i can get the artists meaning of expression by the blurry background. It gaves me the sense of contemplation...like the moment Galad decides to go fight the Forsaken. Because of that i gave you all 5* in the impact! And tho my first draw of the artists is still AviendhaΒ΄s i really like GaladΒ΄s draw, and really hope to see more characters of the series!

Thank you very much for the critique! I like that you pointed out things that took away from the painting. Like the armor and cloak not being detailed enough. I toyed with several ideas on how I wanted him to look and ended up deciding gruff and manly was more suited for a Commander I think I will probably touch this up again as I get better

Deviation Submission: Critique for rejection (Placeholder)

Hey there, this is quite a solid piece! But I do spot a few avenues for improvement, you are correct. So allow me to explain through a critique:

This is an ambitious piece! I'm a huge fan of painting armor myself and the texture is a really good addition. But be careful not to lean too much on textures, hand painted textures will always look best. A simple addition that you can add is some cracks and scratches which come equipped with their own highlights and shadows to add detail. I think the facial anatomy could also be improved a little. The hair is fantastic and the lighting on the right cheek is perfect. The lips however, are a thick, a little unshapely and a tad too dark for a typical white male. Male lips are an extremely difficult aspect of facial anatomy. I suggest looking at some portraiture and studying varying shapes for reference. A rule of thumb that I generally have learned is the subtler the better. One final point, is in the darkness of the area around his eyes. When an outline is so dark and clear, it can cause the eyes to look outlined and flat especially when the whites of the eyes are slightly too white.

You have a good composition and you definitely did not skimp out on the background! It is a solid piece with good areas for improvement and growth. Thanks in advance for your understanding! We look forward to any future pieces and will continue to try and provide unbiased and constructive feedback.

Hey Endave!
I didn't vote on this piece but I'll try and give you some feedback ^^

First of all you have an excellent base down. The textures on the armor and the background are awesome. I really like his hair too, and his skin and stubble.
The only things that let me down are detailing and some anatomy. For example I'm very distracted by his lips, they look a bit low and undefined. As for the anatomy, something looks wrong about the body but I don't have a good enough eye to pinpoint what it is The thumb on his hand doesn't look like it's curling around the sword but just looks like it's sitting straight like one of the fingers.

I hope this helps, though of course it's only my opinion and other people might see it differently

Yea, he is a tough one. I missed the mark on him on this painting though. Lost the part where he looks like a heartthrob. I guess I would have to study guys a bunch to be able to get it quite right...in other words probably won't ever happen. I figured I would rather be staring at a female face and figure for hours than a male when painting

critique send! has you requested! Also i have a challenge to you! Draw Bella with Egwene! BellaΒ΄s the most stable, honest, caring character of WOT for me! She has a huge part in all the books and deserves a best honorable place i think! ItΒ΄s my best secondary character (if you consider her secondary)

Good job. And you're right, after weeks fighting, he wouldn't be pretty any more. (though he's not drop-dead gorgeous...I think you manage female beauty far more easily.)

endave In reply to Angiepureheart [2013-05-13 16:23:54 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I know most people would have imagined him without a beard especially since all the existing art on him depicts him as such. I wanted to have stumble growing on his face since it is more realistic for a soldier not to have shaved during battle. I guess I could always remove it if it takes away from the character.

Glad you liked it regardless of the beard!

Definitely handsome enough to be Galad! If I was straight I would probably be all calf-eyed over your painting! I do believe it said somewhere in the books that the sunburst should be over the left breast of all whitecloak armor and tabards. Other than that, good job! I love it

Thanks a lot for the compliment and feedback! I am really terrible at following descriptions from the book lol I never realized the sunburst was on the left breast...lets pretend this is their updated marketing design

I'm usually a huge stickler for accuracy in my WoT stuff but I accepted this with no problems! The books are lengthy and it can be hard to find the right descriptions. Let's just say the Children are just that desperate for recruits haha!

Hehe thanks! I hope it turns out good. So far I am using 100% imagination on the pose and armor. I used a reference for the face in general. Wanted to make sure he looks like a masculine handsome man and not some pretty boy that looks like a girl Glad I have not yet missed the mark on how he could possibly look.
