asdfghjkl Ch. 192 (Two Crimson Fists) has punched me so hard in the feels, oof how can anyone not be in love with the man, the myth, the legend: Fuegoleon himself XD !! Seriously, if you ain't reading the manga then you ain't living your best life 。゚(TヮT)゚。 (jkjk!!)
As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions on her, and if anyone ever wants to talk Black Clover, I am here <3
Some notes about medieval social classes and ranking before we begin; below the "Noble Rank" but above "Commoner" should be the "Gentry Class," which is basically upper-class rich people who are not nobles, like successful business-men or people who came into a huge inheritance but don't have official titles are considered "Gentry" and this is important cause that's the class Garnett is in :'D
Also, back in the medieval days, nobles did this weird thing where they throw a big party and invite all their noble friends, and also invite famous merchants who would bring all their stuff to sell, and then the nobles would just take turns buying everything to try and show off how rich they were to the other nobles. I don't know what that is called so I'm just gonna call it a "Shopping Party" in Garnett's 'Background Section'
Last note, some parts of her bio is a WIP, so if I put **((text))** it's just me thinking outloud cause I wasn't sure how to word it properly but I still wanted to get my idea out 'orz
Alright here we go (๑•̀◡•́)و✧
「 Garnett Karnelian | Crimson Lion Kings

Her family uses strains of Earth and Metal-based magic; Garnett herself possessing the precious affinity known as "Jewel Magic," allowing her to attack, defend, and heal using a variety of cut-gems.

■ Clothing Style | Despite coming from a moneyed and well-to-do family, Garnett dresses very plainly and unadorned. Her go-to pieces are a breathable cotton shirt with a comfortable corset, and paired with a set of kick-ass lookin' boots to, well... kick some ass, should the need arise.
The only jewelry she wears is a golden bangle and some gem-studded earrings - which double as magical items used for missions - so she wears them more for practicality reasons than for stylistic purposes.
█「 Background 」
Garnett was born into the obscenely wealthy House of Karnelian - a family of merchants and skilled artisans who specialize in crafting quality magical items and high-grade accessories. Their goods are favored by the nobility for being both beautiful and useful, and so the family name can often be heard spoken of in elite circles, even when the Karnelians aren't nobles themselves.
As the eldest of 4 children, it was technically assumed that Garnett would be the one to inherit the family business - especially with her precious Jewel Magic, her parents had hoped that she could elevate their family's status even higher some day. However, as a kid Garnett was the very much down-to-earth kind of girl - the kind who couldn't be bothered with all the superficial things that her family promoted. Though she did enjoy the designing and actual crafting aspects of her family's employ - she couldn't care less about the business parts and had equally no interest in trying to curry favor with the nobility.Instead, Garnett would spend much of her childhood with her head in different books - sometimes to find inspirations for her craft, but most of the time just for the pure joy of reading. Through her books, she would learn about all the legendary magical items and artifacts used throughout history - and by extension, the Magic Knights of the past who had used them - and how many of those items have now been lost to the hidden dungeons scattered throughout the Kingdom. Garnett was absolutely enchanted by the tales of Magic Knights and their adventures, and would go out of her way to seek out more stories, anecdotes, and books about them and their various escapades whenever she could. However, her parents were often around long enough to try and strike those notions from her thought. They wanted her to focus less on her books, and more on her craft; less on her own opinions, and more on the opinions of others; and less on her personal goals, and more on the overall ambitions of the family.
When Garnett turned 15 and received her grimoire, her parents decided it was about time she attended her first "shopping party" which was going to be hosted at the Vermillion Estate. Every noble in a 100-mile radius was going to be in attendance, and they thought it was a good opportunity for Garnett to finally meet the clientele that they catered to.About halfway through the party though, Garnett grew tired of how excessive everything was and decided to sneak away to explore the rest of the manor; stumbling upon the Royal Library as a result and opting to spend some time in there till the party ended.
She had been completely immersed in an encyclopedia of ancient magical items when suddenly, she heard a voice call out to her: "What do you think you're doing?"Startled, Garnett came face to face with a young Fuegoleon - she being 15, and him 19 at this point in time - but of course she didn't know who he was, just that he was dressed in such fine clothing that he must've been the young master of the House or something - and that he was now eyeing her suspiciously like she was some kind of thief who had just broken into the Royal Library - which wasn't completely off the mark, but still.Quickly, Garnett introduced herself and explained to him that she was part of the "Shopping Party", and that she had gotten lost and stumbled into the Library by accident. He looked at her for a few still moments, his face unreadable - his eyes judging, weighing, and testing her - before he noticed the book in her hands and questioned her on it. Garnett, trying not to seem unnerved by him, tried talking to him like he was a normal person. They talk for a bit and one thing leads to another where she ends up telling him about how she's been trying to reconcile herself with her family's ideals, despite her real passion being for the study of ancient magical items, the exploration of undiscovered dungeons, and the retrieval of lost artifacts. They talked about how the life she really wanted was one where she could leave behind her family's opulent lifestyle to traverse dungeons all day and marvel at all the discoveries and muses she could get out of it. In that short amount of time, Garnett had spilled out a lot of her pent up feelings to him, while he listened patiently to her.At the end of of it, Fuegoleon was mildly impressed by her knowledge and passion, and asked if she's ever considered taking the Magic Knights exam, as that sounded like the best way towards fulfilling the desires she was telling him about.Garnett tried to force a smile, saying that she could always dream while living vicariously through the stories that she loved so much, but that her actual life had already been laid out by her parents. His expression shifted slightly, his face still unreadable, and looked at her for another still moments before he finally said, "Well if that's all the resolve you have, then perhaps we should cease this talk so you can return to your shopping party." His words had grown colder - sharper - and implied that she was no longer welcomed in his presence after that comment.Garnett wanted to apologize for what she had said, though she wasn't entirely sure why. She just felt like she had offended him somehow, but took his silence as her cue to leave, handing the book back to him and awkwardly saying her goodbyes.
The shopping party came to an end shortly after their encounter, and Garnett followed her parents home, still troubled by the last words that Fuegoleon had said to her. Afterwards, she would often think about what he had said to her - about all the 'resolve' she had - and became increasingly disappointed in herself, ashamed even - at the thought of living a life through somebody else's choosing, and decided it was about time she made her own choices.
For the next couple of years, Garnett became steadfast in her determination to improve herself - mentally, magically, and most importantly: emotionally - all towards realizing her goal of becoming a Magic Knight to live life the way she wanted to. She honed her magic through her craft and refined it by utilizing them in a variety of situations - pushing her magic to its finely-cut edges to see what it was she was truly capable of beyond the confines of an average jeweler.
At the age of 17 - two years since the fateful encounter that had spurred Garnett into action mode - Garnett took the Magic Knights Exam and gained a hard-earned position into the Crimson Lion Kings.
At the ceremony to accept her Robe, she saw Fuegoleon among the people who had long since been a member of the squad - but she didn't reach out to him or anything, having anticipated that he wouldn't have remembered somebody like her anyways.Much to her surprise however, he actually approached her first - that same serious and unreadable expression he had back then still planted on his face - and said something along the lines of, "What are you doing here? I thought your path was one that had already been laid out for you?"This time around, Garnett was able to look him straight in the eye with absolute confidence and say, "That path wasn't really made for me, so I decided to make my own." She didn't know if it had been his way of trying to motivate her with his words those couple of years ago, but they had moved something in her, and here she finally was.Fuegoleon broke his solemn expression and gave her a satisfied smile, nodding his approval before formally welcoming her as an actual member of the squad.
Over the next decade of Garnett's Magic Knight career, she would go on to prove herself an invaluable member of the team. Meticulous and resolute in her training and missions, she became known for being a dependable asset won the trust of her fellow Lions.
At some point, she even managed to impress Fuegoleon with how thorough she could be.So much so that he assigned her a specific task within the squad; Garnett is usually charged with taking care of the new recruits - making sure they get acclimated to how the squad runs, their creed: what the Crimson Lions stand for - and over-watching the newbies on their first few missions. Because of her special assignment and her naturally staunch personality, she has become known as the "Mama Lion Bear" - something she is both embarrassed and secretly proud of.
**((Garnett became a magic knight when she was 17, and is 26 in the current canon which means she has been a magic knight for 9yrs, which is why she is so experienced and assigned to take care of the new people))**
█「 Personality 」
■ Positives | Modest, Mature, Maternal, Humble, Responsible, Resolved,
■ Negatives | Overprotective, Critical, gets flustered semi-easily
✔ Likes | Reading before bed, appraising antiques, babysitting
✖ Dislikes | When people complain about the food they're eating
In her adult years, Garnett became a very warm, attentive, and self-assured woman. She has a polite, yet open and casual manner of speech that echoes her confidence whenever she engages with people, and has a soothing quality that makes people relax when they are around her. She is known among her comrades for being a natural nurturer and is often spoken of fondly for being a patient and devoted woman, if not a tad over-protective at times. She is hardworking and intelligent, and when Garnett has put her mind to a goal, it isn't hard for anyone to imagine her succeeding in it - "Find a way, or make a way" as she likes to say. Studious by nature, Garnett is a firm believer in that people never truly stop growing - so long as they continue to put in the effort - and so she constantly strives to improve herself daily. Full of humility and self-awareness, Garnett is not afraid to seek out counsel when she may need it, and is likewise receptive when she gets asked for guidance by others. Garnett is a truly appreciative and understanding woman who enjoys working with others, but those traits are not meant to be confused with leniency as she is not a pushover when it comes to helping others to find themselves. As someone who had started out as a weak-willed girl in her youth - but has now grown into a bolder version of herself - Garnett knows that true growth comes from taking personal risks, facing unavoidable setbacks, and having the courage to overcome one's own inner obstacles - no matter how uncomfortable those struggles may be. By the same token, as Garnett has strong "motherly instincts," if she can tell that some of the younger members of the squad are battling with self-doubt or other conflicting emotions, Garnett will nudge them in the right direction or help work it out together with them.Like most people, Garnett is not perfect and despite her mental and emotional security, there are days when she is plagued by mild insecurities - times where she questions if she has done enough, could she have done more, what could she have done differently etc - but she doesn't like to let those kind of thoughts fester in her for too long, so when she feels this kind of negativity creeping up on her, she will ask a trusted friend if they would like to hangout for the day - grab something to eat, or perhaps take a walk - just to talk, catch up, and maybe get a second perspective on whatever's been bothering her. Overall, Garnett is a determined individual with a maternal heart - often putting the good of others above her own, and willing to go to any lengths to ensure the safety and well-being of those under her care. She looks at how she use to be as a learning experience and is proud of how far she's come - often using her own stories of personal development to try and inspire others into believing themselves.
■ Opinion on Social Classes | Garnett doesn't judge people based on whether they are a peasant or a noble and will treat people with the same common courtesy that every human deserves. As a member of the gentry class - upperclass rich folk who aren't quite nobility - she doesn't ever really get disrespected by anyone, but she will never lord her status or rank above anyone else.
█「 Battle Prowess」
■ Magic | Jewel Magic (宝石魔法 Hōseki no Mahō) is a form of magic used to generate different cut-gems for offense, defense, and healing.
Garnett generally takes a supportive role on missions - creating temporary jewelry with her magic that gives a significant boost to elemental affinities for her allies - but she will step in with her versatile magic to cover her comrades' blind-spots if she sees one. These items created by her magic will generally shatter after 3-5min if she doesn't dispel it herself.
- Jewel Creation Magic - Supplementary (Hōseki Sōsei no Mahō)
- Scales of the Sea-Siren (人魚の鱗 ningyo no uroko): Creates a pair of Aquamarine earrings that boosts water-based magic
- Heart of the Yearning Lover (憧れの恋人の心 Akogareno koibito no kokoro): Creates a Ruby amulet that boosts fire-based magic
- Embrace of the Mountain Guardian (山の守護者の抱擁 yama no hogo-sha no hōyō): Creates an Opal bracelet that boosts earth-based magic
- (Marriage) Proposal of the Breathless Fairy (息のない妖精の結婚提案 Iki no nai yōsei no kekkon teian): Creates a Peridot ring that boosts wind-based magic
- Crown of the Brave Queen (ブリギッドの爪 Yūkan'na joō no ōkan): Creates a golden, topaz-encrusted tiara. The wearer gets a power boost to their physical and magical strength, but the longer they wear it, the more reckless they become.
- Eye of the Tiger (勇敢な女王の王冠 Tora no Me): Creates a circlet encrusted with a cat's eye-gem; it enhances the wearer's ability to sense mana. However, the longer it's worn, the weaker the other natural senses become.
- Divination Stones (占いの宝石 Uranai no Hōseki): A spell that lets her predict what kind of magic a person has. When cast, an array of gemstones that correspond's to a person's magic will appear and orbit around her; because each of her gems corresponds to a different element, Garnett can make an educated guess on what kind of elemental affinity a person has by what gems appear when she divines them.
- The four basic elements are the easiest for her to discern, but then it slowly gets tougher. If a water and wind gem both appear when she is divining a person's magic, then Garnett can assume the person has either Mist or Ice magic cause Water+Wind = Mist or Ice, then she has to look at other factors like the size and cuts of the gems to make a decision on what it is she's seeing. It's not an exact science, but Garnett is pretty experienced when it comes to reading her gems so she's usually accurate with her predictions.
- Jewel Creation Magic - Offensive/Defensive (Hōseki Sōsei no Mahō)
- Gemstone Barrage (宝石の弾幕 Hōseki no danmaku): the classic "pelt the enemies with a meteor shower of rocks" type of technique
- Crystal Cave's Rupture (鉱石洞窟の破裂 Kōseki dōkutsu no haretsu): another classic, the 'ole "spikes of stalagmited gems stick out of the ground to pierce the enemy" attack
- Armor of Adamantine (金剛の鎧 Kongō no yoroi): Can cover her skin - or the skin of her allies - with a diamond-like armor.
- Jewel Restraining Magic (Hōseki Kōsoku no Mahō)
- Dark Sable Armoire (黒貂の戸棚 Kuroten no Todana): Encases the weakened victim in a darkened onyx "jewelry box".
- Jewel Healing Magic (Hōseki Kaifuku no Mahō)
- Light Purple Shimmer (藤色のきらめき Fujiiro no kirameki) : An average level healing spell, capable of healing multiple people at once. Floating amethyst crystals appear around the area, emitting a soft lavender glow that heals those in its radius.
█「 Abilities」
■ Physical Strength | ★★★☆☆ 「 3/5 」
■ Cleverness | ★★★★☆ 「 4/5 」
■ Magic Amount | ★★★★☆ 「 4/5 」
■ Magic Control | ★★★★☆ 「 4/5 」
■ Magic Sensing | ★★★★☆ 「 4/5 」
■ Maternalness | ★★★★★ 「 5/5 」
█「 Equipment」
- Grimoire: Garnett possesses a grimoire that contains various jewel-based spells. It's a dusted-pink color with an intricate and multi-colored trim.
- Bangle & Earrings: The golden bangle and garnet-studded earrings she wears actually double as magical items that she crafted herself - which are different than the temporary jewelry she creates with spells.
- If she is ever knocked unconscious in battle, the bangle will turn into a jeweled dome around her incapacitated body, while the right earring will begin to heal her physical body, and the left earring will begin to replenish her mana. These items only have a 1-time use and will shatter afterwards, though she is capable of creating more in her free time.
█「 Family」
■ Father | Barry Karnelian; Carbon Magic
- Barry is basically Varrick from Legend of Korra im sorry okay He is the ideal salesperson - charismatic and confident, even when he is literally spewing absolute shit from his mouth, but is a really engaging and likable fellow. He is highly intelligent and full of ideas, if not just a bit eccentric at times.
- He was a little disappointed when Garnett said she wanted to be a Magic Knight instead of a merchant, but it's whatever - he had a lot of extra kids as backup plans just in case one of his kids ended up being bad at the job so ultimately, it worked out anyways. Garnett thinks her dad is a bit of a wacko, but in an endearing kind of way and they still have a good relationship with eachother.
■ Mother | Agatha Karnelian; Quartz Magic
- Agatha is like a personal 'stylist' for nobles, giving her opinions on what kind of jewelry works best with outfits etc and is quite popular among noble woman.
- She tries to help Garnett with her fashion choices, but too bad Garnett doesn't really care about that kind of thing.
- Every time Garnett goes to visit her mother, her mother will tell her she needs to hurry up and find a husband or else, "Those shapely child-rearing hips of yours are gonna go to waste!!" which embarrasses Garnett immensely.
■ Brothers | Jasper, Morgane, & Emeraude Karnelian; Steel, Glass, and Ivory Magic
- Garnette's younger brothers who are going to follow in the family business;
- Jasper (23) Arrogant asshole who is happy that Garnett left the family cause now he can inherit it- he likes making magical-armor type pieces
- Morgane (19) Flamboyant gaylord who thinks Garnett needs to push out her titties more if she ever wants to land a husband - he likes making men's jewelry and accessories
- Emeraude (14) Shy, mildly insecure, has a gift for healing, and admires Garnett - He is one year away from getting his own grimoire and wants to be a magic knight, but is scared of what his parents will think.
█「 Relationships」
Fuegoleon Vermillion - Love Interest
Their relationship is built on mutual trust and support. They build each-other up with honesty, encouragement, and compromise.
((**How she fell for him probably** In the first few years of joining the squad, when Garnett was still trying to figure herself out, they were having one of their deep talks when she confides in him something that she's never really told anyone; that she use to have a mild dislike for her own magic cause she felt like it didn't really fit with her. That 'Jewel Magic' was too precious and gaudy for someone like her who didn't value things of monetary worth and so on, and wondered if she could really bring out the full-capabilities of her affinity when she couldn't relate to it at all.
He thought about her words for a moment and, while standing close and in front of her, he says something like, "True value cannot be so easily measured by material things like gems or jewels; it is up to each of us to decide what is truly precious and give it meaning ourselves. Sometimes, what is precious to one of us will be hidden from the eyes of other people." and he brushes some stray hair out of her face and walks away, LEAVING HER A BLUSHING HEAP OF JELLO IN THE LIBRARY OH GAWD SOMEBODY CALL A HEALING MAGE CAUSE SHE NEEDS IT
and that's when she started to fall for him. It was also after this that she started developing her style of fighting - creating magical jewelry that supports her allies - it combines her motherly "I want to help everyone" personality with her jewel magic - the best of both worlds.**))
((**How he fell for her probably** Okay so you guys know how first impressions mean everything and it tends to stick with you for a long time? Even though they had been on the same squad for a few years and he could see the small changes in her demeanor, Fuegoleon - for the most part - remembers her as the girl he met in the library all those years ago - a meek and mild-mannered girl.
But one day, during a strategy meeting about a mission the Crimson Lions were being assigned to, Garnett was throwing out ideas, opinions, suggestions, and strategies - just really taking a position, putting herself out there, and providing insightful thoughts on the whole matter. It finally hit him; this assertive and strong-willed woman standing in front of him was not the same wallflower he had known.
After the meeting, he pulls her to the side to talk about how much she's really changed in the few short years since joining the squad - (as he is a Captain and captains should be aware and up-to-date with their squad members abilities and etc.) Garnett kind of found his comment to be kind of amusing and says, "Of course. Just as all gems must be refined, polished, and cut before they can be crafted in jewels, so too must all people change, grow, and evolve, before we can become the best versions of ourselves." She thanks him and tells him that she appreciates him noticing - it means she's doing it right.
And it's after that, that he starts to see her in a new light cause it's when people see eachother for who they really are that they start to fall in love or something, I'm working on it :'DDD)**))
((**How they confess to eachother probably** So the manga right now is at the Shadow Palace/Elf Invasion Arc (ch. 192 at the time of this post)
Rewind till after the Attack on Castletown Arc where Fuegoleon was badly injured and comatosed
Garnett goes frequently to visit him in the medical ward, even crafting a new necklace for him that resembled the Magic Stone he lost - though hers is made from a garnet gem and has small healing properties. She also talks to his sleeping self a lot because she heard that talking to unconscious people will help them wake up faster and she was willing to try anything to help. In one of her "talks" with him, she confesses that she felt more for him than a subordinate should, but all the years fighting side by side with him made it so she couldn't help feeling the way that she felt etc, and that she would give anything to see him wake up again.
Fast Forward, probably to after the current "Shadow Palace/Elf Invasion" Arc when everything is back to normal and there is downtime and they're talking,
he'll be like "Y'know, when I was comatosed from my battle, there were times where I thought I could hear those around me talking - sometimes I couldn't tell if I was dreaming or if what I was hearing was real,"
And she's just like, "Oh really, wow that's interesting, hummm,"
And he's like, "Yeah, there was even a time where I thought I could hear you. You specifically....tell me that you loved me."
And Garnett is like, "Oh....oh" like shit she can't believe she actually did say that, oh shit, and he actually heard it, oh my gawd
And TBC cause I gotta see how the rest of this arc plays out but he probably feels the same way about her <3))
Leopold Vermillion - Comrades
((**So if we do the math, Leo was 7 years old when Garnett became a Magic Knight, so she has known him mildly through her interactions at the Vermillion house from when she had to go there on Crimson Lion business and seeing him made her miss her own younger brothers in the past, and she was really happy when Leo got his own grimoire and officially joined the squad.**))
Leo and Garnett work well together on missions! Because she specializes in support spells and is observant, she can cover all of Leo's blind spots for him when he wants to rampage with his flaming magic - so it works out for the both of them. She thinks that Leo can be a bit reckless at times, but in due time she really believes that he'll have what it takes to lead the Crimson Lions someday.
Leo once accidentally called her 'Mom' when she told him to be careful when he was doing something dangerous and he was thanking her. It was embarrassing for both of them - especially since some of the other squad embers were around to hear it - and it became a running joke that she was 'Squad Mom' for everyone
Mereoleona Vermillion - Admiration
((**When Garnett started being called 'Squad Mom', she was like "Shouldn't Lady Mereo be considered the Squad Mom?" and Mereo was like, "I ain't nobody's goddamn momma; if anyone starts calling me that, I'll beat their ass *^* " or something to that effect and so no one dared to call Mereo that ever again :'D**))
Garnett respects Mereo sooo much. In fact, for the first few months when Garnett joined the Crimson Lions when she was still trying to find herself, she literally tried to act and be like Mereo in an effort to find her 'niche'.
Mereo noticed and beat some sense into Garnett - literally beat Garnett with magical fiery fists - and said something like, "Stop copying me, you dumbass brat. You wanna be strong? Find what you're good at, become the best at it, and then kick ass with it. That's how you become strong." and those words became part of the foundation on how Garnett developed.
Theresa Rapual - Unofficial Mentor/Student
((**By the time the canon starts, Garnett has been a Magic Knight for 9 years. The series doesn't really say when Theresa retired, but I feel like Garnett would've known her for atleast a few years before she retired...**))
Since Garnett is a frugal person (and already has money through her family), she'll typically donate the money she makes from being a Magic Knight to Sister Theresa's church in Nairn. It's Garnett's way of giving back to the community, and she goes in person to chat with Sister Theresa when she can.
((**Sister Theresa was probably the first person Garnett told about her feelings for Fuegoleon when it started to develop - Garnett was mildly insecure about the class difference between them, gentry and royalty is a long step away from eachother etc.
And Theresa was like, "Bruh, I gave up my life in the royal court to be a freakin' nun. In the end, the only thing that holds you back is you, not your class difference." and then Garnett stopped worrying so much about it afterwards and let her feelings flourish for Fuegoleon in secret**))
