Detti only just made it to Pula: HCL | God Save the Dave

Definitely not a hangover. The headache twinging behind his eyes was totally not from another night of "socializing". But how could he refuse? A place like Pula next to the beach? Definitely wasn't a hangover because he could recall exactly how that evening went. Well, bits and pieces. More than not. He was pretty sure he bought someone their own yacht. It was a nice boat! He had definitely bought more rounds than he could remember. But when the company is good, numbers are just details thrown to the wind.
Unfortunately, Dave still had to get up and get working on the actual day of the competition. He rubbed a tired hand over his face, scratching his mustache with a tired sigh. He looked to his side and frowned. He felt a little lonely without his wife next to him. He should be used to it as much as he travelled. When he wasn't travelling, she was staying late at work. He hardly got to see much of her unless he stayed up into the wee hours of the morning just to catch a tired goodnight kiss. He doubted he'd ever stop missing her.
Dave climbed out of bed with a yawn and got his day started like any other on a big competition day: a shower and a good read through the local newspaper. This time, he didn't have a toddler to wrangle, a princess to put bows in her hair, or a teenager groaning at him. No, after London's performance, he opted to go ahead and leave them at home this time. Well, that's not completely true but it's what he told others. He actually didn't mind having them, but the kids on the other hand reamed Dave up and down about dragging them all the way to London in the rain and muck just to watch him take out a jump. They were not impressed with their father, especially after they had been promised a good show following Tokyo. Just another fluke.
And it hit Dave hard, initially. Not the loss itself, but how his children sighed and shook their heads. They thought for just a while, their dad was back in action! But alas, he just wasn't going to make the cut.
Speaking of not making the cut…
Once Dave got to the temporary stables, Dave looked over Detti and looked him over hard. No horse in the history of Burtons got to stay after collecting so many faults. He should have been sold that night in London. Dave wasn't a man to compromise with a horse. If he couldn't meet expectations, then what was the point of keeping him when there were better options available. That had always been Dave's reasoning. He never questioned it once...until it was turned back on him right to his face by his own son. Sure, Chris meant it as a scathing jab at his pride (He learned best from his mother) but it really got Dave thinking… and for the first time in Burton history… a horse that knocked a pole didn't get sold.
He patted Detti's neck, smiling to himself a little, “Perhaps we both deserve a second chance?”
Detti flipped an ear back at Dave. He quietly ate on his flake of hay, remaining quiet and out of the way. That was his job. Behave and do what was asked of him. He held no remorse or regret for his performance in London. Jumping was jumping and he'd do it until his joints got worn down and sore. Until then, he'd carry his rider wherever they pointed his nose. He'd never been given a reason not to trust a human, raised by them from the moment he hit the ground as a colt. In fact, he rather enjoyed their company with their rubs and pats and occasional treats.
And Dave was about to find one of those sweet spots. He didn't have his groom, Jarin, this leg. He stayed back with Tristan, it seemed. Dave had paid a groom on site to get Detti shined up and braided. He saw a stray hair by Detti's ears and sighed, “Do they have no pride?” Dave reached up and pulled the hair, brushing Detti's ear.
Detti's whole head twitched to the side, following Dave's hand. Detti's expression hadn't changed but it was certainly an odd behavior for the stud. Dave raised a brow and pushed at Detti's ear, not sure what the stallion wanted. Detti dropped his head and stretched his lips out, giving a quiet snort a wiggle of his tail.
Dave paused and peeked out of the aisle. Seemed most were busy and it wasn't like many people he knew were in the immediate vicinity… Dave grinned and glommed onto Detti, clapping his hand behind his ears and giving a good rub down. Detti nickered and leaned his head against Dave's hand. His tail swished back and forth like a dog wagging his tail. Oh, that was the good stuff! Detti's knees buckled and his hocks sank. He about dropped to the ground when Dave stopped and clapped his neck. Detti straightened up, snorting and shaking out the good feels. Dave pointed a finger at Detti, “If you speak of this to anyone, I will make dog food out of you.” He cracked a little grin at the horse who had returned to quietly munching on his hay as if nothing had happened.
As if nothing had happened… that's how the duo hit the Pula course! London wasn't a setback. Just another pivot in Dave's career. He came at Pula with a whole new atmosphere pushing him on! New, exciting! A faulted horse with a faulted rider! No kids, no wife, a beach calling his name for a celebration night!! He definitely wasn't riding through a hangover! But one surely was calling his name as soon as he could get Detti over those poles! Funny, where a man could find inspiration to light a fire under his steed!
He ripped across the course, hotter than the sun setting over the beach. They showered the jumps with the arena sand as they sailed over the poles. The agile horse had no problem squeezing into the ring and noodling through the tight turns. Where Dave pointed him, he went. Where Dave asked him, he jumped. They made the course look easy; skilled rider on skilled horse. It was a battle of skills versus faults and Dave hoped with every fiber of his being that they were tipping the scales in the right direction. Dare say...a team effort.

As always, I get so attached to whatever I draw, that includes those little people in the background that don't even get names. This time, not only do they all have their little bits of info, they got their own personal side story <3 These people are incredible. Living in the backgrounds of something great :''')

HCL | Passion Pula's People In  ---> Side Story

Thought starting a month and then some (about a week) before the deadline and I could get this done early and just sit back and touch up on it a bit while it got closer to time. NOPE. I took all of the time up anyway. :'') I can't tell if I'm getting slower at art or if I'm just that good at procrastinating. I'm like a gel. I just ooze into whatever the time-frame is and use exactly what I have allotted myself. Maybe I'll give myself two days next time... HA. Yeah right xD
Anyway, I had a much better time putting this one together. My team brought it to my attention how off my monitor calibration was and that made a load of difference!! I always knew my pieces were a bit saturated but into I calibrated my screen, I had no idea just how dark they were which really hurt my piece in London xD I mean, I can laugh at it now lol So hopefully, this one isn't so hard on the eyes.
You'd think I'd learn to stay away from water as well. xD Water and I don't get along in any medium! And that's why I keep coming back to it for more! I WANNA KNOW. WHY CANT WE JUST BE FRIENDS DAMMIT. D:< So, here's to beating up water again and again until it just succumbs to me or I drown xD
You can see a terrible .gif of the work progress here: sta.sh/0u7a1pws4qc

FUN FACT!!! Dettifoss, the pony, was actually named after Iceland's MASSIVE waterfall, Dettifoss. So like I could pass up the waterfall jump. :'') no matter how much it hurt.~ Good luck team!

LMFAO mission accomplished then xD those background people have a life of their own lmao (I might have been running short of mustache puns and that's the best I could do xD) it can't be one of my pieces unless there's something goofy going on in the background xD plain, serious entry?
