Description So here we have the first piece in what might turn out to be a series for me; DoL (Dragons of Literature). It’s Temeraire from Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series; starting with ’His Majesty’s Dragon’. FANTASTIC SERIES! If you haven’t read them I would urge you to do so as soon as possible! They are stunning!

So yes, Temeraire; the main dragon protagonist from the Temeraire series, partner to Captain William Laurence.

This whole piece is done with fineliner pens; all tone was achieved with hatching and cross hatching; three colours in this one: black, light blue and dark blue. The detail in this killed me (full view if you want to see them). Or if anyone is interested I might upload some detail shots later.

I’m really enjoying doing these, so if anyone has a dragon from a book they would like to see done let me know ^^ I’m all up for having a go. I have a few more dragons in mind that I would like to do and not all from Temperaire.

Also ^^ WATERMARK! I’ve never had a watermark before; the image I used is a tribal Okapi that I drew for print making last semester.

Anyway; enjoy. Also, critique is more than welcome. ^^

thankyou! Truth be told I only used three different coloured pens on this piece. Unlike the other black dragon I did for the same series

Good lawd woman, how'd you pull all that detail without your hand falling off? owo

He looks sweet. He's got kind of an old school woodcut print thing going on.

Thanks Autumn

Apparently patience, that and having to stop every five min to help clean and move random heavy things around the house.

*cackles* woodblocks… dear lord he’d be insane to crave… *eyes him off* utterly insane…

*chuckle* There are a few Temeraire artists; they just slip in and out of active periods; but you’re pretty right on the most recent front a lot of the stuff is yours. ^^

Thanks ^^

Oh mah gudness! The details are fantastic!! I especially like the eyes. Just a little note... Tem actually has no spines or ridges or anything along his back and neck. After I drew him with similar frills, someone pointed that out and it is indeed in the book. The cover art for His Majesty's Dragon is wrong in that aspect. XD

dracona-fin In reply to amrini [2009-01-22 23:27:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you am!

I’m aware that in the novels Temeraire was not mentioned to have spines but after sketching him up I thought he looked a little naked; although it might not have been so bad once all that detail went in.

As for the cover art of ‘His Majesty’s Dragon’ I doubt Naomi Novik minded too much as Dominic Harman (the artist) was commissioned to do not only ’His Majesty’s Dragon’ but ‘Throne of Jade’ , ‘Black Power War’ and ’Empire of Ivory’. Although I will admit Celestial dragons only appeared on the first two novels, (Iskierka on the third and what I think is a Winchester on the fourth).

Harman not only did the orginal book covers as released by Del Rey books, but was commissioned to do the covers for the first three novels when they were released through Harper Voyager (although Harper Voyager has a great number of reported misprints regarding the text). This second set of covers by Harman also appeared on the limited (500 copies) and lettered (52 copies) editions of Temeraire books. Both versions of which had illustrated scenes by Anke Eissmann. These special versions were also all signed by Naomi Novik. I will admit that Eissmann’s artwork of Temeraire (and Lien) did not have spines.

It seems to be a matter of personal preference on the behalf of the artist…

>.>; and I’m a nerd for knowing all that information about a cover artist *needs a life*

Its gorgeous. Alot of detail and time went into it.
And the 'Temeraire' Series is one of the best dragon series ever. xD I've read all of the books and loved them all. lol I love how you gave him the pendant he got from Laurence. xD
Great Job. < 3

Thankyou

I had to keep herding the cats out of my room to finish this; one of them even stole my pen halfway through. >.>; crazy felines.

I’ve just finished reading the books; well bar Victory of Eagles which was only recently released over here… I need to track down a copy.

^^ Of course, he’s not Temeraire without his pendant!

Thanks again :luv:

lol My cats do the same, only they bat at my pencils as I'm sketching or playing with the mouse on the computer screen, getting in my way. xP

I didn't know Victory of Eagles was released. I even just checked a few days ago. I'll have to check again. -hops happily-

Of course he's not! You did really good with it, its just like I pictured it in my head. xD

And you are very welcome. < 3

dracona-fin In reply to FieryMaze [2009-01-22 23:36:57 +0000 UTC]

Haha ^^ my lot also manage to steal pencils and should one find them again later they have teeth marks in them. They are mighty good at getting in the way; I don’t know the number of times I’ve had to explain that the strange gibberish in my IM’s was my cat sleeping on my keyboard.

Victory of Eagles came out in July (in the USA) and in hard cover in December (in Australia); the paperback versions have just come out here (Australia). *is a nerd*

Lol, I could make some comments here about how great minds think alike as that was how I’ve always seen it in my head too ^^ Thanks ^^

lol Yeah, my dogs are the ones who make off with my art suplies. xD And anything else I own. o____o

Omg, I have been stalking book stores around here for months and not seen it. >< I'll have to complain. xD

lol Great Minds do think alike. xD It really looks just like I always pictured it. And I always loved picturing Temeraire laying there, polishing it when he doesn't always agree with Laurence.

Cheeky beasts!

*chuckles* Yes! Local book shop owners are always fond of when people come in and tell them when books should be in ^^. Mine often give me funny looks when I ask for the Australian release date of something because they apparently don’t already know that something is out in the USA… so random…

^^ I’ve always seen Temeraire sitting there polishing it too; like some sort of nervous habit.

lol Yeah, I bet! Dunno why people who don't even know that much work at book stores. xP

Yeah, he does do it mostly when he's nervous, or trying to work up the nerve to say something. xD

I bet its because they want to annoy booklovers! *conspiracy theory*

It’s a comfort thing ^^ and people wonder why dragons would hoard things? Its so they can be comforted! ^^
