Woah.  What an opening to a critique.  Damn, that...wow.  I mean, it's a good critique, and I know that you are friends, but I am surprised at how it opened.

Don't worry, I talk to my friends a bit like that too, but just not too often digitally.

I love that you noticed it hahaha
Isn't it brutal? But yeah I mostly talk to my friends like that online as opposed to irl
It's fun isn't it?

Honestly this is great! Love the colors used with this. However, I myself color straight up and down but, with the way you did this, the details seem to stand out better. The turtle looks very life like. The seaweed is a great touch as well because it's living in the ocean. My only complaint is that the colors weren't straight up and down. However, this is really good. Perhaps in the next drawing you do you can add some more sea life in it like small fish or even baby turtles. Again, great work and keep improving on your skills. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

thank you so much for the critique! c: you have some really good suggestions, i'll keep them in mind!
may i ask what you mean by "straight up and down" though? XD i'm kinda dumb sorry

Chrysisi In reply to DogeDays [2015-06-14 23:35:43 +0000 UTC]

Actually I'm not even sorry for rudely interrupting, this critique bothered me.
The way you colored was fine, your stroke directions give it appropriate texture especially on the shell.  Assuming these are colored pencils, scumbling would be a better technique for smooth or textureless surfaces (like the water).

Making every stroke in the same direction is advice teachers give to their third graders because they wouldn't be able to understand anything more.

No such thing as dumb. I'll be happy to tell you. When I meant straight up and down, I meant use your color utensils going up and down when coloring. It helps it match together easier.

This is very nice! A photo, did you say? I guess the image could be clearer if it was scanned, but it looks pretty good to me. I'm curious to know what the size of the drawing is and what materials you used? :>

Great job on the lighting! I love the blues and greens that you used in the background~ The texture and lighting on the turtle's skin also looks gorgeous.
I don't know much about coloring animals (or doing anything without lines really) but mayyybe it'd help to give the shell a slight darker outline? So it doesn't blend into the water as much? Or wait, maybe it's supposed to blend into the water. What am I saying??
Anywho, the texture and the pattern on each piece of the shell is pretty cool. I also like the way that the grain of the coloring on the leaves follows the their shape. Very smooth.
And finally, despite there being not much other sea life around, I really like those fishy silhouettes in the background!

I've been meaning to sit down and write a critique on this for like a week now. Literally, I think half of the views are from me having the tab open for a week straight and accidentally refreshing it all the time.
But first off, what is it about this that stands out to you? Like what do you like about it and what are you not so sure about?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DogeDays In reply to VexFox [2015-06-19 15:54:23 +0000 UTC]

ahh that means a lot to me, you give the best feedback ever, thank you so much c:
hmmm, i'll have to think about that one X'D
i guess i like the green colours i used on the leaves because i'm such a sucker for green lmao
i don't like the way the water looks, i wish it looked more blended, i guess. i wish the leaves looked less cookie-cutter and had more variation in them. and just everything about the scales on the turtle is a train wreck XD i probably should have spent more time on them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VexFox In reply to DogeDays [2015-06-27 19:46:02 +0000 UTC]

I'm finally doing this because I'm tired of having a stupid sea turtle picture open on my computer for weeks straight xD
As for the leaves, I think they need a lot more movement and randomness. Seaweed is really thin so that it can move easily in the waves and not break. Here's a picture to show what I mean: scienceforkids.kidipede.com/bi… It's a tangled sloppy mess. The anatomy and shape is also a little different.
As for the water, you may just need a different brand of colored pencils to blend it better. Some blend a lot more than others, while others are almost waxy and so they refuse to blend.
Also /the background fish/ Jaaaay they're stick fish you can't do that xD It'd be neat to have some more of them and for them to be in realistic fish shapes.
I actually don't think the turtle looks too bad. What you could do is take a dark brown pencil and put in some darker spots on outline pieces of the shell so it seems like there's shadow and more depth. Compare it to a picture and I do think some of the parts could be a little darker to make them stand out more: www.chillcover.com/wp-content/…
Yaaay I can finally close the stupid turtle tab on my computer now!

XD I'M SORRYYY YOU COULD HAVE JUST CLOSED IT IF IT WAS THAT STRESSFUL YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO
thanks though, i really appreciate it c:
you're absolutely right, i need to study all of this more before jumping in i guess XD
i don't think it's the brand though, i think i just need more practice c:
I KNOW IDK WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE FISH THOUGH LIKE ALL I DID WAS COLOUR THEM IN REALLY LIGHTLY AND THEN I WAS LIKE "naw that doesn't look good" SO I PROCEED TO DO THE REST OF THE WATER USING THE EXACT SAME COLOURED PENCIL AND THE SAME PRESSURE AND FOR SOME REASON THEY'RE STILL VISIBLE?! XD but you're right i should learn how to draw fish better ;v;
ooh good idea c:
YAY MUST BE A RELIEF XD

VexFox In reply to DogeDays [2015-10-09 21:42:49 +0000 UTC]

*slams fist on table* I WILL FINISH WHAT I STARTED DAMMIT
Brand actually can have a lot to do with it too c: Some colored pencils are more waxy and don't blend well at all while others are less waxy and the pigments blend well. But yeah just do some research on it and ask others who have similar things to what you're trying to do ^^
COLORING IS CRUEL LIKE THAT. It probably just still stood out because the pencil strokes were in different directions.
BY ALL MEANS YOU SHOULD DO MORE TRADITIONAL DRAWING THOUGH BECAUSE IT'S STILL VERY GOOD

that's a good tip yeah, thank you c: THEY WERE ALL PRISMACOLOURS THOUGH AND IDK THOSE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE GOOD AT BLENDING TOGETHER RIGHT?
ughhh yeah that's probably it XD traditional art is hard haha

I THINK PRISMACOLORS ARE BETTER KNOWN FOR BEING VIBRANT COLORS. If I were you I would buy a few types of different brands and try them out yourself.
