Description Here it is, my pirate costume currently assembled.

The coat is based off of the Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean attraction poster. It is fully lined with functional pockets and 20 hand-antiqued buttons

The waistcoat is inspired by Hector Barbossa's in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. It is double breasted with 6 buttons. Though the picture makes it appear unevenly long, this is just the way it is sitting on the manequinn, the sides are even lengths.

The baldric is a fairly standard pattern. It was cut, dyed, and the buckle antiqued all by hand.

Did you make the waistcoat?

Yes, I did! I'd like to redo it, though. It's a little loose and I didn't put the right weight of interfacing inside it--I guess laziness never pays off.

What material was used for the whole costume?

The shell on both the coat and waistcoat are duck cloth, the coat is lined in polyester suit lining, the waistcoat's lining is crepe satin.Β

All of this came from good old Simplicity 4923. I made some simple modifications (skipping the gusset and turning it into a vent, the waistcoat I lengthened and widened the front pieces to make it double-breasted. It is an incredibly versatile pattern that can be very easily modified to achieve quite a few different period looks.

I used Simplicity 4923 as my base pattern, then made some small adjustments to accommodate lining and how I wanted the godets to look

I stopped reading at the "20 hand antiqued buttons". And it has lining. Git out *points to door*

hahaha. This costume has been a real labor of love. The saddest part though is that the coat is just for stock when out pirating, it wasn't actually meant for me specifically; I just wanted to see how my size according to the pattern would fit.

DerGrundel In reply to Aelfie [2010-08-25 04:07:48 +0000 UTC]

aw, once I find myself a faster way of producing these, that may be possible. As it is that coat took me the better part of 4 days. Then again, if I eliminate the lining it'll probably only take me 2--maybe less.

Contrary-wise, you can always provide a pattern and then your job is done.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DerGrundel In reply to Aelfie [2010-08-26 04:39:03 +0000 UTC]

hahah can do! I used Simplicity 4923 for all the pieces--I think it's still available. On the coat I removed the godets and added lining (as the pattern didn't call for lining, silly pattern). The waistcoat was extended to be double breasted and I lengthened the back panel because it looks silly with a waist-length back and thigh length front. The shirt, although not shown, is unaltered from the pattern save for not using any interfacing; I like the floppy collar and I can just toss it in the washing machine without worrying. I wore this costume out pirating just today, there pictures of it uploaded to facebook.

Enjoy! I look forward to seeing your pirate costume when it's done! (or progress shots when you get different pieces done).
