(So, you wanted a novel from me, analyzing every minute detail of this cover? No? Well, you're getting it anyways :V)
It's like the cover of a fashion magazine. They're all beautiful, styling and profiling.
I really love how you tied together the background's colors with the clothing, it really unifies the piece. It almost feels like they're in a storybook, with how whimsical the brush strokes are for the grasses and the clouds.
The composition, where you used the large tree to balance out the weight of all the main figures on the right was a good way to go about this, without everything feeling overwhelming. The way the figures are placed around the focal point--Makoto--creates a circle around him that really brings the eye to him. It leads the eye to Makoto, around the group, then up the tree trunk, and back down along the swing's line to Makoto. It's really harmonious.
Around Makoto is the rest of the figures--which could be considered secondary, since he's the main subject. It's almost like they're creating a warm, protective circle around the youngest member. Like they're inadvertently ready to protect him from the world--which, considering that hes' their trainer and they're the fighters, that's sort of their job. It really highlights how important Makoto is to not only the piece, but to the team members themselves. Everyone gathers around him like he's a magnet, a force that sort of holds all these different people together.
The positions they all have are also pretty interesting.
We know that Elli's always hovered protectively around Makoto, since day one, looking over his shoulder. But in here, he's sitting down and looking up at him. He's not casually lounging like Kairos, but he's stepping down and letting Makoto read the map and lead them without being a worrywart.
I mentioned Kairos, so let's do him next. He's also a figure that's sitting down on the grass. He's lounging casually, showing how confident and lackadaisical he is. He has his usual little smirk on his face, but it's not really a smirk. It's not showing any teeth, it's just sort of...like he's relaxing and genuinely enjoying the moment. He's also looking up at Makoto, and to me I think this represents that Kairos sees Makoto as this ridiculously innocent, almost angelic presence. A kid not yet tarnished by the cruelness of the world, someone who is really open and accepts everyone-- even a guy like him, who no one else should honestly trust.
I suppose we're going counter-clockwise, so let's look at Eve. Even standing, she is very poised and put-together. She's used to being a professional and representing the lab she works in, so I think she's always had to look proper. The way she's hovering pretty close behind Kairos shows that she's used to his presence, so she doesn't mind if she's starting to encroach in his personal space (not that Kairos probably has any, lmao).
Tiv shows her casualness and her great physical abilities by balancing herself on the swing that Makoto is perched in. Her lack of shoes shows both that she can be grounded, and that she's fun. She's looking down on Makoto, hovering almost on top of him. Almost 'standing up for him', if you will--which is Makoto did when he spoke up for her all those chapters back. For his kindness and for giving her a team to join, a sense of usefulness, she's decided to stand up for him in turn. He's not very strong physically, but she is. She will be his big, scary, fighting type knight to beat all the enemies away from him.
Now, Isaac. He's looking out for Makoto, and he's the eldest, so he's a father figure to the boy. Hiding his arms behind his back can also show that he's feeling very relaxed and show an openness of him wanting to listen to what Makoto is saying. As the eldest, he may feel confident in his knowledge of the world, ready to offer his advice or assistance if it's needed.
Aaaand Makoto. I've mentioned before that he's the central figure, so I'll move onto other details. He is very boyish while sitting down, one leg folded under the other. Plus, sitting on a swing is still a childlike thing to do, so it just compounds on how young he is compared to the others. Even while reading the map to the team, he seems like he's telling them where they could go, and is still very open to suggestions. A way this is presented is through his body language, actually, because he's not sitting properly on the swing with both feet down, in a firmer stance. One foot is down, the other is folded-- representing that he's trying to lead them, but he is also flexible enough to realize that he doesn't hold all the answers and could use their input as well. Plus, his one foot handing down isn't even properly touching the ground, compounding on his youth and also telling us that he's not very firm and is still finding a way to put his foot down and lead them confidently.
Plus, their arrangement sort of shows some of the ways they're interconnected. Elli and Isaac are on the left, and they're both male figures who sort of mother-hen Makoto. Isaac and Tiv have felt abandonment issues in their own ways, and meeting Makoto has sort of given them a place to belong to. Tiv and Eve are female figures that act as older sisters to Makoto, who also use physical actions to protect him from harm. Eve and Kairos both know each other before they joined the team, and joined around the same time, so it makes sense that they're placed so closely to each other on the right. And...I suppose Elli and Kairos share a trait of not wanting to jump into a fight right away unless it's needed of them? Hm, I've gotta think on this a bit more, but that's all I've got.
It looks like the team is taking a break, during a nice and quiet moment in time, before things become chaotic again. Hopefully this spells out good things for the future...Unless you're just lulling is into a sense of safety before springing things on us :V But I honestly think that they can take on Surge, and Erika will be no problem, just gotta see if this actually happens.
Also [clenches fist] so much pink...so pretty...so pure...Makoto being the adorable Pink King...I love it.
