Description Drawings I did of my top 5 favorite movie monsters/creatures.

5. Mugwump

From David Cronenburg's film, Naked Lunch. A movie way too bizarre to follow, but the creature effects were outstanding.

4. Nightmare Demon

Appeared in a nightmare of protagonist David Kessler from An American Werewolf in London, one of the best horror movies ever made.

3. Brundlefly

Also from a Cronenburg movie, The Fly, starring Jeff Goldblum at the title role. Great film, and unconventional as horror films go.

2. The Thing

John Carpenter's The Thing remains and will most likely remain one of my all time favorite movies, a suberbly done minimalistic horror.

1. The Alien

As many of you know, Alien is not only my all time favorite sci-fi AND horror film, but my favorite movie of all time, for too many reasons to list. Perfectly crafted, it will never be surpassed.

R'ka...wait, did I just speak Yautja again? Damn it. Basically, I just said Xenomorph.

These are great! Β Awesome that you included Mugwump, too! Β How crazy was that movie?

The Thing and Alien are probably my favorite sci-fi horror movies as well! Β I wish they still did practical effects like that in movies again.

Thanks man! Naked Lunch is very hard to get through (though I do have the hankering to watch it again sometime soon) but as expected in a Cronenberg film, the creature effects and designs are top-notch. Love how bizarre it is, though it's admittedly off-putting at the same time for that reason.

Oh yeah, same. It's one thing to use practical effects (which is rare enough these days) but to have such great designs utilized so well in such well-made films with really effective stories...that's really hard to come by!Β

Exactly! Β There's something so gross and icky about it (literally and figuratively), but it's so fascinating at the same time. Β The first time I watched it, I didn't know anything about the book it was based on or William Burroughs himself, so I was totally lost. I tried reading it, but it was even more off-putting. Β More or less the self-indulgent ramblings of an angry drug addict. Β Not fun. I doubt reading the book would really shed much light on it, anyway. Β Best to just let Cronenberg's genius carry it!

Totally! Β I can't think of many (or any!) modern examples that even come close, though I'm sure there are some. Β For a little while it seemed like people were getting tired of overly slick CGI in movies and wanted a return to great practical effects, but that trend might already be waning.

I've seen all these movies except Naked Lunch, but The Fly is by far my favorite movie of the 4 in the pic i know

The Fly is a near-masterpiece, that's for sure!Β

Naked Lunch is hard to get through, but it's bizarre quality is certainly fascinating. Β

This is too great you've perfectly illustrated the fascinating concept that the mythos of horror movies is just as dynamic, varied and beguiling than that of traditional scifi and/or fantasy.

Thanks!

Horror is such a fascinating genre, deserves the same amount of respect as any other genre! Β

I've heard them labeled that too, everything sounds cool, so I don't really have a preference.

Pretty well done piece,
Β You definitely got my favorite movie on here for number 2
As for Naked lunch wasn't bad movie, very hard to follow but after taking look at it.

Its not bad film,
just very surreal then again there was drugs involved so it made sense
why he saw lot of these creatures or did what he did after he took bug powder or remains of centipede.
For his addiction Other wise this pretty nice piece.

Thanks!

It's not my favorite movie I'll admit, like you said, it's very hard to follow. The creatures in it were really awesome though, which is why I included it here.Β

Brilliant work on all of them, you name some of my favorite movies and I'm not even a horror fan. Would LOVE to see your rendition of Kessler's transformation!

Thanks! I'm not even the biggest horror fan myself, the vast majority of the genre is pretty awful unfortunately. :/

Zeartist In reply to Deimos-Remus [2013-05-19 14:36:12 +0000 UTC]

I agree. Most of the time it's just some monster killing people and the story has no brain or heart. "The Fly" had both.

Exactly, that's what I liked about The Fly so much, you could feel for the characters.

not familiar with #5 but, 1-4 represents an awesome period for movie creature design.

I didn't like the movie it was from, but the creature effects were great. Same makers of the Fly.

Definitely, from the mid-late seventies to the mid-late eighties, the most memorable monsters emerged. Great movies!

Saw the original Alien and it's sequel Aliens after first seeing Alien vs. Predator which got me hooked and interested in them because it reminded me of watching old giant monster movies like the original Godzilla film series.

'The Thing' (1982) is so disturbing. You should do something for Evil Dead next!

It's a great movie, I have to watch it at least once a year.

I like the Evil Dead and all (mostly the third movie), but I didn't feel that the monster designs were as iconic as Ash himself. Ash'd be fun to draw though.
