Description Updated version of my old drawing of Notre Dame. Disastrous happening. Rather symbolic of notre temps.

Seems like France has been going through tough times in recent years.

I just heard that because the Assassin's Creed Notre Dame was so detailed, and accurate, the architect rebuilding it is using the game version as a model.  And Ubisoft is donating money for the reconstruction effort.

The Assassins will rebuild, what the fire has destroyed.

Glory to the Assassini!

The cathedral in the game looks quite accurate (although not for the time of the French Revolution, when it I gather is set, since it has a spire. During that period the cathedral was between spires, the original medieval one having been removed in the late eighteenth century, the later spire dating from the mid nineteenth.) Hopefully the latter will be reconstructed, anyway, and they won't replace it with some glass and steel modernist abomination.

Heartrending to watch. Though the loss of the 'forest' that held up the roof was a tragedy and the toppling of the spire a shocking sight, it's lucky the structure itself was saved (assuming no hidden damage has rendered it too unstable) and no lives were lost.

My heartfelt thanks and admiration goes to the valiant members of the firebrigade who fought the conflagration, many of them from within the burning building and on top of the towers, to contain the fire, and managed to save the structure and the artifacts at the risk of their lives.

Now I hope that whatever route they take for the renovation, and for the reconstruction of the roof and the spire, does preserve the harmony and serenity of the original.

I can report after looking at multiple sources that, the cathedral suffered significant damage, including the collapse of the entire roof and the main spire and substantial damage to the rose windows, The stone vault remained largely intact, and the interior described as 'relatively untouched'. Many artifacts were saved and French President Emmanuel Macron has announced plans to rebuild, the stone ceiling vault beneath the roof prevented most of the fire falling into the body of the cathedral below. The primary structure, including both of the towers, and one-third of the roof remain standing, most of the stone vaulted ceiling remained in place, but sections had collapsed allowing flaming debris to fall through, the fire was "potentially linked" to $6.8 million dollar renovation work happening on the peak of the cathedral, 400 firefighters were on-scene to tackle the blaze, Stone, copper, and bronze statues, including statues of the twelve Apostles had been removed from the site days prior to the fire in preparation for the renovations. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but was being treated as an accident by police. The prosecutor's office had ruled out arson, including a terrorist motive for the fire. And Middle Ages specialist Claude Gauvard claimed that not enough money had been spent on maintenance, saying: "The ongoing works finally got started – and it was high time, and perhaps even a little late. I went up to the foot of the spire (before the renovations began) and some of the brickwork was disjointed, held in place by a grate to prevent it falling." This last statement is the most likely explanation to why the Spire collapsed

Survived the Hundred Years War, the French Revolution, three industrialized Franco-German wars two of which saw Paris fall to the enemy.... dies because some random contruction worker probably didn't plug in his drill properly.

Tragic. And a grim reminder of how fragile our world really is huh?

I found out about it a few hours ago. I'm not merely sad; honestly, I feel more angry than anything else. I was just looking through some photos I took while there back in 2015 to console myself a little. But now it's pretty much all gone. All those priceless stained-glass windows, the statues, everything. It survived for 850 years, and it burns to the ground right before Easter, not to mention the fact that this happened after a massive spate of arsons, vandalism, and desecration of Catholic churches all over France, including an arsonist(s?) who set fire to Sainte Sulpice, statues that have been smashed in Yvelines, crosses made of human excrement painted across the wall at Notre-Dame des Enfants in Nimes, and attacks in Notre-Dame in Dijon, numerous incidents of crosses and tabernacles being smashed, and worst of all, the Eucharist being stolen and desecrated by being thrown on the floor or thrown in the garbage. I find the headline for this article laughable:  www.newsweek.com/spate-attacks…

Color me shocked.

On the positive side, I had heard that they managed to save some of the relics (the "treasures of Sainte-Chappelle") from Notre Dame. I'm hoping they're able to save a lot more of the building, but I guess we'll find out in a few days how much damage was done and what can be salvaged.

I saw some photos of the interior just now, not quite as bad as one might fear, most of the visible damage seems to be above the level of the stone inner vaults, though at least one section of vaulting, that which was above the central crossing, has collapsed down to the floor. Possibly the heat has done more damage to the stone than is readily evident. I can't tell what condition the windows are in, though there was some talk of melting or shattering. It could get worse yet. Time will tell, as you say.

All very appalling, anyway.

I was also fortunate enough to see the cathedral in happier times, when I went on my abortive travels in the early naughts.

108-190 years to build it (1160-1350), 856 years of use. Only a few hours to destroy it all.

A total disaster...

I'm not a religious guy, but damn, this is one of the biggest and greatest parts of France"s patrimony which is burning.
Some very important pieces had been saved (St-Louis's tunic) , but the whole wood structure is gone... Some of these parts were 1000 years old trees...

This is terible, just terrible...

Notes Dame is the heart of Paris, and it’s been standing there for many years. I don’t like seeing it get burnt, in fact I don’t like seeing any cathedral get badly damaged, because it’s a place of worship and peace.

I pray and hope that it will be fixed and mended, and for all the people in Paris and across France who are heartbroken at this tragedy to eventually heal from the pain. Because in the past from 2015, I think France has gone through enough already.

I really,REALLY hope that not all is lost.Hopefully they can put out the fire and save the remaining structures....but the spire and the Rose window were the iconic parts and they’re lost now.Its really upsetting that something as historical and important as this is being destroyed and I really hope that it can be salvaged
