I cannot recall being more shocked than when one first heard that Notre-Dame de Paris was afire; September the 11th was horrible, yet felt quite unreal and the outcome of the "Brexit" Referendum just left me disappointed, but to heard that such an Icon was in flames ... that was not quite a blow, but still left me stunned.

Beautiful piece. The way you painted the sky looks magnificent!
Politics and religious debates aside, the building was a piece of history, and had told many stories over the years. I do think that it's a tragedy.

I wanted to paint sky, cloud, smoke for a while but somehow postponed it every time. In the end I'm glad I did it here.
You're voicing my mind precisely about all this. This piece of history is damaged but not entirely destroyed. In some decades this fire shall only be considered another part of Notre-Dame's greater story.

Okay, before going into the tragedy, I want to take the time to say that this artpiece is gorgeous. The soft textures add a flair to the smoke and flames.
With that being said, it's very tragic to see this happen. To start, the building is over 800 YEARS! That's a very long time for a building to stand with minimal damage. The worry I have with the funding are that to get the materials that made this is going to be expensive (even with the funding page, it's a lot), and if France's economy will fall from how much they have to pay.
I could be overthinking, but that's my opinion.

Oh, okay.
That's a good thing for the funding to do well.
However, I agree with you even more about people having this much motivation when it comes to helping other humans in need.
Exactly! It's hard for the engineers to get everything back to normal in such a short period of time.
If the government decides to rebuild with new materials, it opens another basket of issues since wood and metal don't exactly work if wood is at the bottom.
We will have to see what comes next to know for certain the outcome.
Finally, you're very welcome~! You deserve the praise!

Very nice painting, I love how you did this.
However, I feel like people are overreacting, the catholic church is stinking rich, they could restorate/rebuild it just fine.. No people or relics where hurt or destroyed.
There are so much more pressing matters in this day and age, and to see how rich people just within 24 hours of this happening have offered millions and millions of euro's to help with this "tragedy" makes my heart bleed.. Where are they when we need them for more pressing matters? They just keep silent and keep their money in their pockets, refugees, poor people the health of our earth is less important than a building it seems.. )':
Nonetheless it's sad.. But it's not the end of the world.

It does not depend on the catholic church to rebuilt it since it is a public building, belonging to France and not to the church (Church and State are separated in France, and religious buildings and their maintenance is left to the State).
That being said, I'm sickened too by that much money coming from people who don't give it for the poor people and destitutes. My feelings last night came from the bottom of my heart, a genuine sorrow, but I feel too that the rush to rebuilt is poorly managed and too politicised. I am not convinced in my heart that rebuilding is the first thing to do but I guess there is philosophical/psychological need behind: make it "as it never happened", conquer death and destruction, make a statement that man is stronger than tragedy. While nobody considered it possible to burn, it did; while nobody considers it possible to rebuilt quickly, they want to do it. I guess in the 7 stages of grief and loss, this is only number 1, denial.
A lot of words to say that, all things considered, I agree with your feelings.

Nothing sad about this building burning. Sad is how theirs poverty and war, and children are dying from both. Sad is how it's acceptable to kill a baby have an abortion. Sad is how funds are given more to looking for nothing out in space. Sad is how children get molested.

As much as I don't like France, Notre Dame is a fundamental part of the Parisian skyline. I'd hope they can rebuild it, but it's not something you can just restore...
At least they were able to get some statues out...

ElissaKarminakria In reply to Noctis-Corvus [2019-04-16 13:57:33 +0000 UTC]
The statues were out 5 days before the fire. Many pieces of art and relics were removed when the fire began, and some remained but are almost safe - though needing restoration.
Beyond architecture and beyond religion, Notre-Dame is fundamental in France's history, this is the heart of the country, even for non Catholic people. This is were we celebrate national mournings (despite our country being constitutionally non-religious), for instance when we had those terrible attacks in 2015. Surely the grief is stronger for those who had a strong bond with Notre-Dame. I don't expect people from all over the world to mourn, but in France this is something big, a tragedy.
The only good thing about it is that we see people from various backgrounds, races, religions united in their grief. For example, I was moved to read the French Council of Muslims invited the muslims in France to giving money and prayers for Notre-Dame. The last months in France were nasty, full of divisions... I guess every cloud has a silver lining.

Hm... I was under the impression that Notre Dame wasn't very important until the novel about it. At least, that's what I remembered on the sign when I visited it a few years ago.
I may not like France (or the church) myself, but it's still a tragedy. : /
Well, they were divisions caused by poor thinking on the side of the politicians. Adding a tax on top of the problems wasn't going to help with public opinion...

I should've said "in modern France". Indeed before Victor Hugo's novel, Notre-Dame was not that much a symbol. A great writer and everything changed: the power of words!

Though nothing can replace this historical roof, I hope the rebuilding will be an opportunity to secure what's left and make it last many more centuries.
Twenty years ago, Windsor Castle took fire too, and I read they did a pretty good job improving the non-visible parts (like electrical system and ventilation)... Let's hope for the same kind of work for Notre-Dame.

Truly heartbreaking, I was in shock when I saw the news. I really hope the main structure will survive, and that there is a chance of building up the roof again. It has been done with other churches in the past...
The little good thing is that many of the bronze statues were removed from the church before the renovation.

There are no extensive reports about the damages, but what I learnt:
-roof is burnt;
-most stone parts are, so far, still standing; but there are many burnt beams and water over the vault that weaken it and may cause it to collapse ; there is of course damage on the vault due to the spire falling;
-the altar is safe, as well as most relics and art that could be removed;
-some stain-glassed windows are broken but I read the South Rose is safe;
-no knowledge about the paintings and art that were inside and could not be removed; smoke, ashes and water may have caused damages to them.
Still waiting...

They were! More relics seem to be safe (all of them actually) and most of the paintings that were inside, as well as all the oldest stained-glass windows. They were able to strengthen the places where the building was weak with temporary fixes and the great organ only needs fixing.
On the "destroyed" side, the big clock that was inside is broken. But considering all that's saved, I don't feel for it that much.
