Good start - and a good way to practice is copying the masters.

And you shouldn't worry so much about " ruining it." There aren't any mistakes, just experiments that you learned more or less from. And you seem to learn less from the experiments that went as planned.

Original is by a lesser-known Regency portraitist called Thomas Phillips. He did another fams painting of Byron, dressed in an Albanian turban.
