It's interesting to see this issue 'live' because I'm not an American but I have some clue about the problem.
I understand those non-believers who argue that they don't want to swear on something that they don't agree with. I wouldn't do that either (and I am a believer).
And I see your point, talking about offence. I usually think of (and sometimes phrase) the same idea about coursing (which is really offensive if you consider God somebody that you love..and from the ohter side, there is no point in it at all really).
Maybe the whole thing is simply about the fact that different directions won't lead to the same place ever. Because if you consider rights, everyone has his/her right to choose what to believe in (until it hurts others, Liberalism says.)
The only problem with this is how to define that? If I believe this is right and this is wrong, but you believe in another way and we have to tolerate everybody...It's like I can't do anything without hurting somebody. Isn't it illogical?
I think it is. Like a snake that bites into his own tail.
An insoluable problem? And I mean in a broader sense, not just about the Pledge.

Christianity is a religion. Government siding with a religion is pretty much a no, considering how the Constitution was written. It doesn't matter if most of the founders were Christian, the country was founded on the belief that church and state should be separate. That is one of the main reasons they even bothered setting up their own country. (It should also be noted that Deism was more popular back then. Some Founding Fathers are thought to have been Deists and a few are known to have been Deists.)
Imagine they pledged to something silly, like turnips. Everyone saying the nation was founded under Turnips, swearing to Turnips at the court... Such passion, over a vegetable. Suggesting something more serious or universal applied is met with ridicule, and taking it to court is met with more ridicule and turnip swearing. Wouldn't you feel a bit unwelcome at that point if you weren't into turnip worship?

Kind of a tired joke, considering that "Under God" was added to the pledge in 1954, and was never part of the original pledge in the first place. Furthermore it's not a matter of God offending atheists, it's the idea that the pledge clearly places an emphasis on what is very obviously the Christian god which violates the First Amendment.
I suppose it's funny if you're ignorant.

It was placed in the Pledge of Allegiance, because people realised that this nation was founded on Christian beliefs and people. That America has fought for Christianity many times. It's not just an establishment of religeon. There is quite a very large difference beween religeon and Christianity.
I stand for what I believe in, because I've been given the right to do so. If you find it quite ignorant, so be it.

You are aware of what the First Amendment says right? It doesn't matter what you believe America was founded under and while it's charming that you believe Christianity is somehow "greater" than any other religion the fact is that those beliefs are to play no part in any of our government's policies or laws. That includes dictating which God, much less a specific God, we are obligated to deem as the God of our country.
Also, as you did bring it up I'll admit i'm intrigued. Exactly what battle have we fought in the name of Christianity anyways? After all you said we've fought many, so if you could give a few examples that would be great.

If you want to get technical, no one teaches you to be an atheist...depending on what you accept counts as atheism. To be more specific, until you are taught that there is such a thing as a god you're already an atheist up to that point. After that it's simply a matter of if you believe what you are taught or not. So unless you believe in a creationist beginning the first atheist would be the homo sapien because no one had invented the idea of a god up to that point.
And while I appreciate the Wiki link, I asked specifically for examples of battles waged by Americans for the sake of Christianity. I'm well aware of the tribal wars in the time of the Old Testament as well as the everything from Rome's reaction to it, to the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition. However this is a discussion on the idea that America is a "Christian nation" and given that the previous comment asked for information regarding that I'm afraid your link is kind of bunk.

Credibility. It's part of rhetoric. Ethos is the part of rhetoric that makes you think, "OK, this guy's offering me Ibuprofen for cramps. Is he a licensed doctor, or my Uncle Phil?"
Seeing a statement laced with poor grammar makes me [at the least] dismiss whoever spoke as lacking logic. A typo here and there I don't mind, but typing with all the punctuation and words mashed together really bothers me.
