Update 8/15/07: Reworked bits and pieces... added more ambiance.
An experiment in a bottom-up style of painting; a heavily stylized portrait of one of the most amazing people I have ever met. Painted originally as a get well present because I felt powerless in helping him. I'm not quite happy with how stylized the face is, but I like the overall look.

great! hair is so hard to do, but you painted it so well here, with all the right hairs and swirls in all the right places... as you can see in my deviation you commented on I just made her hair all blobby 'cos that's the best I can do XD haha, anyway, I also love the overall colour scheme and everything in general in this pic, it doesn't look too dark to me (someone else said something about that) I mean, it looks really dark, but it looks like it's supposed to. one other thing I wanted to point out is that if you were trying to make it anatomically correct, the corner of the eye should be further to our right so it matches up with the crease of the nostril, but since this is so sylized anyway I don't think it matters that much. cheers.

I agree with the eye placement issue; if I go back and tweak other things about this picture, I'll definately make an effort to change that. Hair is really fun for me; I used to not be able to do it at all, but I have a method now that works to some extent, although it is one of those things that looks better smaller than at full-size.

I still really like this version, the colour scheme is great, and the angle is awesome. You really know how to work with compotition, which I STILL am having trouble with. . .

Yeah, composition is something that's hard for me, too. I always end up getting lazy and cropping out half of the picture near the end... this picture almost had that done to it, but I stuck with it and strived to finish his pants (which I'm still kinda upset with)

Hehe, usually for me the cropping out is what makes the composition better, cause I'm lousy at making the piddy interesting. . . The pants look great, though! Silly boy, you need to be less harsh. . .

Awesome work, Cindy! I can't believe you did that with a mouse. That takes skills. I bought a tablet in Dec and I can never go back to mouse. Ever! Still, a common thing I see with your work is that they come out too dark, and it appears to be dark on any monitor I view your work on. So, unless you meant for them to be that dark, maybe you should think about how to fix that, if you want to.

I like how it's so realistic, yet oddly styalized, especually around the eyes. It comes off looking really cool! The clothing is wonderfully done and very realistic looking, although he hands and some of the layers look kind of cut out at times (what you were saying earlier about working on making it look even less flat). And the colors/lighting are awesome. Does he ever get tired of posing for you?

The whole bottom half of the picture was really challenging for me, since I don't paint alot of clothes (namely pants) or hands... they did end up looking really cut out

does flattery chase away laryngitis? Beacuse if it does, you may have discovered the cure. I hope he likes it--i think it captures a side of him that he'd be pleased to have on display. The colors are very rich despite the lowish value, and while the textures aren't right-on, they have enough definition that they don't melt into the over-all texture of the piece, which is very painterly. The exaggerated/stylistic anatomy works perfectly, though you could take it even farther--maybe try that in your next "portrait"?
