Description I was getting really annoyed at my old description for this picture, so here goes something new:

This is was portrait of a friend of mine that I tweaked and changed (alot) to turn it into a portrait of a character of mine, named Damien (not to be confused with my character Daemion, of course ). I'm not entirely pleased with the perspective, because I sort of changed it near the end of the picture without going back and reworking anything. I'm also not very happy with his neck, because there isn't very much definition to it. I love the hair, and I loved the eyes more before they got shiny-ified. This in-progress view of the picture shows everything that's good about it. That was the original angle/lighting/etc., and as you can see, it changed alot from then to the current version. I'm not sure if I like it better or not, but I can't really do anything about it.

I plan to go back and add more details and definition to his lips and neck, and hopefully make his eyes look better. I may work on the angle of the face more, but that really requires effort...

PLEASE GIVE ME A CRITIQUE OR SOME CONSTRUCTIVE CRITISISM ON HOW TO MAKE THIS BETTER

Hey!! I was wondering if I could use this picture as a siggie for a character I'm RPing

I really like the picture .. the neck is kind of softish but I like the expression. To me it gives the impression of someone who's a bit attached, bit aloof of those around him , like my char, Lorando Kassav, is

I'd love it if I could your name would be on it, of course

A good drawing my freind. The eye on the right seems off almost though. It might be the size of the reflection in the eye or my computure (which you never know)

I like the soft tones. I wish my teachers liked soft tones...

Hmm..
I think you should choose which part of his face/neck is facing the light source and then put a slight shadow on the rest of it. Right now, it looks like you're focusing in on his neck, which is fine, but his entire right side of his face is lit up. Must have been the flash Also, the pupil in the left eye could be angled out a tad.

The hair, chin, and beauty marks look 100% better from the last version. Good job on this portrait!

Awsomeness! He has all these different textures now with the way you worked the light. Makes him look so tangible. All I can say now is smooth out the bottom of the nose (it looks strangely concave) and work a bit on the left eye (our left not his)-- maybe make the inside eyelashes thinner with more skin showing in between, and the reflection/shine in that eye a bit more pronounced.

WOOOOWWWWW! HUGE improvement, I say! Great stuff! Heehee! Yay! hmm....trying to find something...maybe the shadow on the nose...you did such a great job on shadowing everything else, but the nose doesn\'t look like it has enough shadow to it as you go up....but it is still really really good! VEry Awesome! I\'m just picky, cause I know ya want it to be perfect!

Wow! It looks really cool now!

Of course there's things to improve on...... To start, I'm nooot sure how I feel about that eyebrow (the one you can actually see). I feel like it should be thinner and longer, not short and fat. I know the perception is different for that part of the face, but the eyebrow should still cover more of the top of the eye than that.

And btw, the moles, the hair, and that sting look much, much better. The moles under the right eye (our right, not his) look a little bit unrealistic... maybe the shadow's doing something weird? Maybe there's too many moles on his face? I dunno... try messing around with that...

Looks really cool, tho. Keep going!!

cinderscar In reply to FrogLord [2005-02-19 17:37:50 +0000 UTC]

If you look at the eyebrow on the other side of his face, you can see that it goes out across his eye really thinly. If you put two-and-two together, you realize that his eyebrows are thick at the front, and then get really thin as they get longer. Like Jane's eyebrows. Well, like most girls-who-mess-with-their-eyebrows.

This turned out reall cool so far. Tha angle looks really hard to do, but you pulled it off well. I actually like what the hair is doing, but it looks a bit less realistic. It seems to me though that he's missing the top of his head, or that he could have more hair up there, but that could just be me... I like the background, it's simple but cool.

This could be just me, but the smudged ends of the hair bug me for some reason. The look like they're like they're being melted togeter. Some sharpening could help.
How did you do that background texture?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cinderscar In reply to Slumber [2005-02-17 21:36:42 +0000 UTC]

It's actually a piece of fabric that had a sort of watercolored pattern which I scanned in and applied with low opacity over a gradient color background Thanks. I'm not too fond of that part of the hair, either.

Hoohooo full blown out portrait. Ok time to be picky! Well its hard to point out things that need to be fixed without the reference, BUT first thing I notice all over is that with that seemingly strong light source more defined shadows might be needed. Like the hair going over the forehead the skin color remains the same across. Um..the frekles look like they're all the same color exactly..they shouldnt since some have more light on them and such. I think I kinda said the same things with the link picture..about the edges between things (skin and clothing, hair and face_ seem to be too clean cut as it was all different layers or...the mask tool =O (which I wouldnt recomend when doing painterly pictures) aaand the teeth look a little flat? 0_o I dunno I'm tired.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cinderscar In reply to Immp [2005-02-17 14:56:48 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha... it was all painted on one layer, except the hair, actually.

The lighting is off because the lighting in my reference was so weird (well, not to say that I wasn't at fault either, but shhh!). It had this strong, yellow light coming from the lights on the ceiling, and this soft, cold, bluish light coming from the windows on the other side of the picture. When I added the background, I forgot about that other light source... so now it just looks as you mentioned, weird. I think I'll have a fun time going back over this and fixing the lighting! Thanks for mentioning it; I would have completely forgotten/ignored the problems --_--;

(oh, and shush about the freckles you're not supposed to notice, hee hee)

FrogLord [2005-02-17 05:44:39 +0000 UTC]

Hey! I like it!

One thing I might say, tho, is that the strings on his neck look a tad bit too sharp.... maybe if you did some shading (if possible) on his neck, or make the strings a softer black, then it would be sweet.

The side of his face looks way better with the hair there. It fits his face more and makes him look more... like a guy. It's much better.

Man, if only the real person saw this... they'd think it was cool.

.... , I've gotten a lot of favs on you, huh? Too much coolness....

I'm still not happy with that side of his face, actually. The necklace and freckles were sorta spur-of-the-moment last-minute sorta stuff... I'm not really happy with how I did them, either. Thanks!

Yeah, those DO look a little bit rushed.... but if you were to actually put time into em, you could really make them look cool.

angler-photi [2005-02-17 05:35:49 +0000 UTC]

Yay~! The mole-things look kind of unrealistic 'cause they look like splotches of paint for some odd reason, and the string around his neck doesn't quite look very realistic. The left side of the picture (my pov) is kind of lacking in background; it contrasts a bit much with the right side (my pov).

I love the liquid quality of the hair. So shiny . . . *_*;; *reaches out to touch; fingers crash against screen* ow.

Tis a very coo pic! I love the view-so interesting! But, because the view is kinda lik elooking up at his face, you might wanna draw a lil bit more of underneath his chin! But I donno...that might just be the way that the model looked, and I have never seen em...so I guess I ain't a very good judge then, eh?
