The details are wonderful! But isn't her lap rather long?

Thankyou. ^_^
The logic I initially intened behind it, was that the dress would extend far beyond her actual legs. If you look at the old poofy victorian dresses, they are huge. ( [link] ) It's like having a foot of lace and pettycoat padding for your legs. Perhaps I didn't handle it very well in practice, but that was the intention behind it.
Still, no matter what the reasoning behind it is, if it's giving of the wrong impression, then this is obviously something I need to think about more in future, so thankyou for bringing it to my attention. ^_^

Glad to hear it. It would be decidedly unfortunate to be unwelcome in such matters. ^_^

I really love the semi-sketchy shading you did on the tablecloth, as well as the heavy amount of detail you incorporated into your work.

Thankyou. I'm glad you like it. ^_^
Yes, the shading is getting awfully sketchy. Ironically though, my lineart seems to be getting more precise. I guess it's an effective contrast, if you think about it.
And yes, detail is something I seem to have a fondness for. Or just sticking in as much random junk as I can. One or the other. ^_^

It was certainly a fun background to draw. Just a case of letting ones immagination run riot, though I do like the idea of a room full of eclectic furnishings. Any particular bit of it grab your attention?

That's ok. I realise that not everyone speaks English as their first language. ^_^

Well anatomies really important. In fact, there probably isn't much in drawing that's more important. That's why I do so many anatomy sketches. It's all practise.
Perhaps that's jsut because you don't draw enough females? Maybe a little more practise wouldn't hurt?
Yes, it did take quite a while, although this pencil work is actually a fair bit quicker than inking it would have been.
Still, I'm glad you appreciate all the details I've put into this. It makes it worth the time spent on it. ^_^
Smoke is hard to draw. Really hard. I still don't think I've got it quite right, but I think I'm probably on the right lines now. Once/if I finally get the hang of it, then I'll have to move on to drawing clouds!
Ah, now, the creeses in dresses and skirts are actually fairly easy. There's a few basic rules that cover how clothing bends and creeses. You just need to have a look at actual dresses, rather than just trying to make it up out of thin air, and you'll soon figure out how it all works. Then you can start making stuff up!

Well, this would seem like a normal opium den (as normal as those are nowadays...) except i found the crooked clock compelling. Really made me take another look at the picture to find any other hidden gems. A very nice trap.

A lot of my more detailed pictures are full of little things like that. I'm never entierly sure if people actually notice them or not, so I'm glad to here that you appreciate all the little details. ^_^
As for the clock it'self, who's to say if it's actually crooked, or wether it just looks crooked. Bearing in mind, it is in a room full of opium smoke... ^_^

BrendanKeeley In reply to kahbn [2008-02-28 18:14:42 +0000 UTC]
In principle yes, but don't forget that lots of other people get the same idea, so opium dens tend to be full of robbers, theves and cut-throats all out to prey on the clientell.

Details are fun. It's just a case of letting ones rather warped immagination run riot and drawing in anything you feel like drawing. ^_^
Yes, hair styles in those days had a tendency towards the towering monolith look. It's almost certainly a wig though.

Keep it up, bro. I can't wait for a cartoon with such details (unless I missed it when clearing 2000+ deviations at the same time).

BrendanKeeley In reply to WaroDaBeast [2008-02-23 10:43:46 +0000 UTC]
Don't worry, I fully intend to "keep it up", but thankyou for the vote of cinfidence. ^_^
To be fair, I probably won't be able to cram this much detail into each comic panel. It's just a matter of working spance size really. Because this is a full page picture, there was a lot of room for all the cool stuff. With comic panels, there's less room for details, as not only in each panel limiting the ammount of room you ahve to put things in, but what room you do have is first and formenost for the actual character and speach bubbles.
I'm going to try and cram as much as I can into each one though. ^_^

WaroDaBeast In reply to BrendanKeeley [2008-02-23 15:33:40 +0000 UTC]

Yes, in comics, panel size can vary, but you're still somewhat limited.

Thankyou. ^_^ This was just one of those cram in as much as possible kind of pictures.
I know. Why is it that all the fun bits of Victorian life like opium dens are never mentioned in victorian novels?
Wow! Coming from someone as good as you, that's high praise indeed. ^_^

Heh, thankyou. I am rather proud of this one. ^_^
To be fair, it's just a combination of standard elements in my pictures such as old fasioned dresses and rather warped quasi-victorian furnishings. Still, it's probably a fairly effective combination, and it was certainly fun to think it all up. ^_^
And thankyou for the +fav! I really appreciate it, and value your support. ^_^

Me too. I've got a real soft spot from Ye Ollde Clothes of Yore. ^_^
It's too bad you don't see more of them on DeviatArt really. -_-
To be fair though, most of the things I draw are not officially accurate Victorian clothing. I tend to mix and match the bits I like, so there's a fair bit of both English and European dresses in there, as well as some of the earlier industrial revolution era clothes.
