Note: The information below is from my own universe which is a blend of old and new canon and it not to be considered canon in any other universe but mine. I should also mention that this ship is canon (at least legacy canon) but its history is significantly different as far as my universe is concerned.

Following the Battle of Endor, Admiral Ackbar calculated that the largest threats the Empire had left were their massive Executor Class Super-Star Destroyers. To wit, he began reaching out to his newly liberated people on Mon Cala, to begin designing what he hoped would be the New Republic's answer to the Executor. He would work closely with these engineers to develop what became known as the Viscount Project. It took several years to develop and development was finished by 9 ABY. Ackbar, with backing from pro-military members of the Senate, commissioned the first Viscount for the New Republic. However construction was slow as the Mon Calamari Shipyards had never constructed anything of this size and scope before. Corellian Engineering Corporation was brought in to assist. By the time the Galactic Civil War formally ended in 11 ABY, the Viscount was considered to be around 35% complete. Eventually, in 24 ABY, the first Star Defender was launched to the applause and cheers of people watching via holonet. The retired Mon Mothma was asked to personally dedicate the vessel. With the aid of ex-Imperial Engineers, including many that had worked on both Death Stars, the Mon Calamari and Corellians worked to find ways to streamline the Viscount's construction process and within four years, by the time the Shadow Wars broke out, a second Viscount had just been launched with two more on the way. The Viscount, the first ship of the line, under the command of Bothan Admiral Traest Kre'fey, was on a deep space patrol of the mid-rim when the Shadow Wars broke out in 28 ABY. The Viscount and its forces were then redirected to Sullust to aid in the defense of the planet. In 29 ABY, after the desolation of Taris by the crime lord Tyber Zann, the Viscount was sent to Taris to oversee search-and-rescue operations as well as to defend the planet from future attacks.

The Viscount Class is often referred to as a Republic Super-Star Destroyer as they were designed explicitly to counter the Empire's own Super-Star Destroyers although most just refer to them as Viscounts. Their armaments and fighter compliments are superior to the Executors and require far fewer crew than the Executor Class.
