"Remember those old GR-75s?" "I try not to." - General Lando Calrissian and General Carlist Reekan regarding the GR-75.

Designed as a cheap and easy to operate mid-bulk freighter, the GR-75 became a popular ship for freighter crews with low budgets to afford new ships. The GR-75 became predominantly associated with the Rebellion as the Rebels were able to acquire the freighters due to their low price tag. The Rebels would use the transports throughout the Galactic Civil War, using them primarily to transport large quantities of their cargo and supplies while also using them to ferry ground vehicles to the surface for ground combat. The transports became so frequently used by the Rebels that they became known as "Rebel Transports" and became symbolic of the Rebellion. Even though the transports were unarmed, they were still often brought along into combat zones as there were typically no safe places for the transports to go while the Rebels fought. Grand Admiral Thrawn penned an observation about the Rebel Fleets that, the absence of the GR-75s among other transports likely indicated that the Rebels had found a new base. The more competent Imperial Commanders would use this to their advantage in attempting to locate the Rebel Base. The Rebels would use some of the GR-75s as fireships, sending them against enemy capital ships to inflict heavy damage on Imperial fleets. After the New Republic was established, the GR-75s were hastily abandoned as newer and more efficient transports could be acquired, with most returning to civilian service. A few New Republic Fleet Commanders still use GR-75s as fireships.

The GR-75 was based off the older GR-45 model and was aesthetically similar but was built with more updated technology and featured numerous smaller improvements over the GR-45. The GR-75 was cheap and only needed six crewmembers to pilot it. Its armor was also fairly thick and resilient. It also had a large cargo capacity for a ship its size. But that was where its advantages ended as the GR-75s were notorious for being riddled with design flaws and a high maintenance requirement. The GR-75s were regularly suffering breakdowns and had to get parts replaced regularly. Another aspect of the GR-75 that made them unpopular was their open-air cargo bay which would make many nervous about hauling cargo on them, fearing that the cargo could break loose and be set adrift in space, fall out and burn up in atmo, or worse be lost in hyperspace, becoming a faster-than-light ballistic missile. The GR-75 was unarmed by default and in accordance with Imperial Regulations. The Rebels seldom had the weapons to spare to arm these ships and so an estimated 89% of all GR-75s galaxy wide have remained unarmed. However there are a few that were armed for special operations.

A couple notable GR-75s exist in galactic history. The first was the Bright Hope which was the first transport launched during the Evacuation of Echo Base and successfully escaped the Imperial Blockade. The second was the Blue Guard. The Blue Guard was the transport intended to carry a second V-150 Planet Defender Ion Cannon system to replace the one left behind at Echo Base. However, while the cannon was being loaded into the transport, Rebel scouts reported the arrival of three Imperial Star Destroyers. Thinking quickly, the cannon was installed on the hull of the Blue Guard, arming the vessel with a powerful ion cannon weapon. The Blue Guard was then deployed in a desperate gambit. Rogue Squadron would escort the Blue Guard into orbit where the Blue Guard would disable the three Star Destroyers. Rogue Squadron would then bombard the bridge of each destroyer and effectively cripple the vessels, allowing the Rebels to escape. The plan proved a success and the Blue Guard would serve the Rebellion until its destruction during the Battle of Jakku when Imperial TIE Bombers damaged the cannon, causing a backfire and destroying the ship.

this one appears empty, they should create a model with removable cargo modules.

I actually wanted the empty model so as to showcase the ship itself more. There is a model of the GR-75 that has it loaded but the textures are bleh.

I like your reasoning for the constant presence of these ships in Rebel fleets during battle. Makes much more sense than other theories

Well I imagine the Rebels would refit some of them with weaponry. Not all of them though.

From wat I remember though, the problem with the GR-75 was its lack of power generation. It could only support up to 6 laser cannons and that’s it. I’ve seen theories of them being used as fire ships (which u mention), supply ships for extended battles (which doesn’t make sense seeing as how much consumables ships typically r stocked with) to being used for target saturation. One use of these ships which I saw in a comic series was used to transport X-Wings to the Yavin base to replenish their fighter wing so maybe use as a pocket carrier?
