Description This is one of the ships from my canceled Star Wars Fanfiction Series: Star Wars: The Shadow Wars.

Note: The information below is from my own universe which is a blend of old and new canon and is not to be considered canon in any other universe but mine. I should also mention that this ship is canon (or at least Legacy Canon) but its history is significantly different as far as my universe is concerned.

The image was acquired through Star Wars: Empire At War - Forces of Corruption, using the "Old Republic At War" Mod.

"These cruisers fought off the Sith four-thousand years ago. It seems appropriate that they return once more to fight the Sith off again." - Adm. Cartha Onasi, New Republic Admiral, Commander of the Ebon Fleet Group, regarding the Hammerhead Cruisers.

The Hammerhead Cruisers were, much like the Venator Star Destroyers of the Clone Wars, were once a familiar symbol of the Old Republic's military and naval power. These cruisers formed the backbone of the Republic's fleets in the years leading up to and well beyond the Mandalorian Wars, the Jedi Civil War, and the Dark Wars nearly 4000 years before the Battle of Yavin. The Republic relied on these cruisers as a sort of multi-role vessel, essentially acting as the "Star Destroyer" of their era. These cruisers could carry wings of twelve Aurek Class Starfighters into battle, and were capable of landing on a planet's surface to deploy ground troops. Their design proved quite popular and symbolic amongst Republic worlds, some even being acquired by Republic member worlds such as Onderon and Telos for their own defense. These cruisers would continue to serve the Old Republic for well over 3000 years, with a couple still in service when the Galactic Empire rose to power. Unfortunately, the Empire's new Tarkin Doctrine required all traces of the Old Republic be swept away and the remaining Hammerheads, along with many symbolically Old Republic vessels where hastily scrapped. Many historical preservation groups protested the moves as many of these cruisers were considered artifacts and still contained records and recordings of battles and wars now considered ancient. Their protests fell on deaf ears from the Empire though and the ships were sent to Raxis Prime to be scrapped. Fortunately, in an early act of defiance, a cell of Rebels stole all the Museum Ships from the breakers' yards and escaped with them, the old ships being hidden away on various planets until after the rise of the New Republic in which they were taken to the planet Manda to be added to the Baobab Archives and placed on display.

After the Fall of the Empire, Corellian Engineering Corporation approached the New Republic's leaders with an interesting proposal. The New Republic needed ships to replenish their strength and be able to counter the Imperial Remnant. The plan by the Corellians was to help make the return of the Republic even more symbolic by manufacturing modernized variants of symbolically and historically "Republic" warships for the Republic Fleet. Among the designs included the Hammerhead Cruisers as well as Thranta Corvettes among others. Surprisingly the Republic declined as the symbolism of the Old Republic had been somewhat tainted with visions of corruption, bloat, and stagnation, images that the New Republic didn't want to have represented. The implication that the New Republic would not be the same as the Old that got overtaken by the Emperor. However the New Republic did commission additional CR-90 Corvettes and Gunships from the Corellians. The Corellians, not missing an opportunity though, instead began building the proposed vessels anyway only advertising them to local planetary authorities for purchase as part of a "Return to the Republic" package which would include the Hammerhead. As such the Hammerhead, for the first time in 3000 years, once again became a semi-common sight within Republic space.

The New Republic would end up commissioning several Hammerheads anyway with the outbreak of the Shadow Wars in 28 ABY. Kento Marek's Liberty Group was assigned two Hammerheads to replenish its numbers following losses sustained at the Battle of Rhen Var. Some historians have found the reintroduction of the Hammerhead to the Republic fleet oddly appropriate as the Sith Empire has similarly reintroduced modernized variants of ancient Sith warships from wars past, most notably the Harrower Class Dreadnought in the form of the Malak Class Star Destroyer. The Jedi Order has one Hammerhead in its Flotilla, Revan's Bastille, named jointly after Jedi Master Revan of the Jedi Civil War, and his eventual wife, Bastila Shan. The modern Hammerheads are aesthetically similar but boast modernized armaments including additional point defense laser batteries and stronger turbolasers. The modernized designs have left a lot more room for cargo and crew space, as such it's not uncommon for the modernized Hammerheads to double as assault carriers, ferrying at least two squadrons of Republic Starfighters into battle. Alternatively these cruisers can act as well armed cargo ships, carrying much needed logistical supplies for the Republic Navy.

The Hammerheads did spawn a legacy of their own though, and many shipwright historians, especially Corellians, point to the Rendili manufactured Hammerheads as the start of a long and so far unending trend among the Corellian Engineering Corporation in designing ships with a sort of "hammerhead" shape. The first Corellian vessel with the Hammerhead design was the Thranta-Class Corvette popularized during the Great Galactic War which similarly had vessels of the same class that survived up until the Empire ordered their breaking up. A final hammerhead designed ship, the Sphyrna-Class corvette, would be designed for the Old Republic circa the Great Sith Wars and would continue on even into the New Republic era, although they lack the historical significance of its predecessors. The Sphyrna was the last Corellian vessel to incorporate the "Vertical hammer" design as the CR90 Corvettes that succeeded them would start the trend of the "Horizontal Hammer" design. There have been other Corellian and even Rendili designed ships to incorporate the "hammerhead" aesthetic but only the ones mentioned here gained any type of long term popularity or longevity.

Hammerheads, of all models, including their cousins the CR90 and their similar models, are particularly useful for an unorthodox and very risky tactic of ramming disabled enemy ships. During the Battle of Scarif in year zero, a squadron of Y-Wings disabled an Imperial Star Destroyer using ion charges, leaving the destroyer adrift. Admiral Raddus ordered an older Sphyrna corvette to ram into the destroyer's starboard side, rev engines to maximum and forcibly turn the destroyer so that it would veer into the path of another star destroyer to its port side. The tactic worked and destroyed both destroyers, slicing the second in half while the other was sent colliding with an Imperial Shield Gate Station in orbit around Scarif. Raddus's strategy was recognized after the battle by Rebel Command and nicknamed the tactic of disabling enemy capital ships and ramming them as such a "Raddus Maneuver." The Raddus Maneuver was later repeated to great success during the Defense of Tammuz-an during the Shadow Wars in 28 ABY using the Tammuz-an Hammerhead Cruiser "The Lord Toda", against a Sith Malak Class Star Destroyer to send it careening into a Sion Assault Ship attempting to land an invasion army, destroying both ships and crippling the Sith's attempted invasion before it began. The Lord Toda survived the engagement and, although damaged, was soon repaired and returned to active duty. New Republic Forces would later arrive to help bolster Tammuz-an's defenses.

There are three Hammerheads of note in Republic History, all three mentioned in the Holocron of Jedi Master Revan and the Jedi Exile Meetra Surik. The first was the Endar Spire, the cruiser used by Bastila Shan during the Jedi Civil War that also was used to transport an amnesiac Revan as a means of monitoring him in case his memories were to suddenly return. The Endar Spire was destroyed over Taris during a Sith Ambush but Revan, Bastila, and Republic Pilot Carth Onasi managed to escape to Taris and would end up being among the few survivors of the bombardment of Taris. The second was the Harbinger which was hijacked by Darth Sion and his crew of Sith Assassins in an attempt to hunt down and kill Meetra Surik, who at the time had been cut off from the Force. The Harbinger reappeared after the unconscious Surik had been spirited off the ship and arrived at the mining facility of Peragus II. Surik and her companions were forced to board the Harbinger and fight their way through it in order to reach the ship's engineering section so they could cross back into the mining facility to escape on Revan's old freighter, the Ebon Hawk. The Harbinger was believed destroyed by its own turbolaser fire after accidently sparking a chain reaction in the highly explosive and volatile asteroid field surrounding Peragus II but there is no confirmation and any records of the search results are believed to have been lost in the millennia since, as the only record presently exists within Revan's Holocron. The third Hammerhead is the Sojourn, the flagship of Admiral Carth Onasi, a decorated Republic Admiral who was a close friend of Revan and Bastilla's during the Jedi Civil War.

We need a new version of these hammerheads for the new republic.

Agreed. I imagine they'd end up looking like a sideways CR-90 with a rounder "hammer" so that they look more like the Corellian Corvettes of the original trilogy.

Actually I’m not a fan of the cr-90.

well the cr-90 was not meant for warfare.

True, but then half of the Rebel fleet wasn't meant for warfare. Take the MC80s and most of the Mon Cala ships. Most of them were meant as peaceful exploration vessels and civilian transports. The Mon Cala would retrofit them as warships after the Empire invaded their homeworld. And let's not even start to mention those Gallofree GR-75s which were hardly ever combat ready.

They were phased out but that was in canon. In my universe they're still active and have been modified for more regular combat.

I included this ship into the Shadow Wars for the simple reason that I freaking love it in KOTOR. What more reason do I need?

Edit: Somehow I knew this one would get a lot of favs. Sure enough, less than a minute after i post this, it's already got 4 favorites. You guys are awesome!
