"My new command? Ironic." - Kasan Moor upon seeing her new flagship.

The Liberty, like most of the New Republic's Star Destroyers, started out as a Star Destroyer under the control of the Galactic Empire. The Liberty, originally the Arrestor, started out as an Imperial-I Star Destroyer, and was named after an Acclamator Assault Ship that had been used during the Clone Wars and destroyed during the Battle of Coruscant. The Arrestor was launched around 9 BBY and served the Empire faithfully, becoming the mobile headquarters for the Empire's elite 128th TIE Interceptor Squadron under the Command of Lieutenant Kasan Moor. However Moor, an Alderaan native, wanting vengeance for her people, wanted to look for her chance to defect from the Empire. Her chance came in 1 ABY when she learned that the 128th was to defend the planet Gerrard V from the Rebellion's efforts to thwart the Empire's making off with the planet's riches. Kasan, wanting to defect, secretly sabotaged the fighters of her fellow squadron members and during the battle, many of them lost control and crashed into the ground without even suffering any damage. The rest were shot down by Rogue Squadron. Moor's fighter was disabled by Gold Squadron's Y-Wings where she signaled her desire to defect.

After their failure to subjugate Gerrard V, the Empire recalled the Arrestor back to Kuat to undergo the refitting to the new Imperial-II configuration of Star Destroyer. Supply snafus within the Empire (as well as a few supply interceptions by the Rebellion) delayed her refits so she wasn't ready to redeploy until 4 ABY, just a month before the Battle of Endor. Not long after the refits were complete, the Arrestor, operating on a skeleton crew in drydock, was attacked by the Rebellion in a raid on the Kuat drydocks, meaning to steal the Empire's ships and the Arrestor was the largest prize of the raid. However her engines were damaged by Imperial reinforcements reacting to the alarm raised by the Kuati defenses but she still managed to escape. The Arrestor would've participated in the Battle of Endor but damage sustained to the Arrestor during the raid caused her to be left behind, hidden amongst the debris of a decades old battlefield from the Clone Wars where the Empire recovered her. She was later captured a final time by the Rebellion during the Battle of Jakku in 5 ABY. After the battle, she was renamed Liberty. From that point forward, Liberty began a new career of helping to establish and defend the New Republic.

In 18 ABY, Kasan Moor, now a decorated and respected Rogue Squadron pilot, suffered an injury that damaged her vision in her left eye. The damage proved too severe to fully repair and thus disqualified Kasan as a pilot. Still determined to serve the New Republic, Kasan was offered command of a fleet group and accepted. When she was taken to her new flagship she couldn't help but recognize the irony of her being placed in command of the very ship that had ferried her and her fellow 128th TIE Interceptor Squadron members to their missions. However she took the irony in stride and has taken command with pride and distinction. Liberty was on station at Coruscant when the Sith Empire reappeared and declared war on the New Republic in 28 ABY. After the battle, Liberty Group was placed under the command of Jedi Knight and General Kento Marek, the son of Rebellion Leader and founder Galen Marek. Liberty serves as the carrier for Liberty Group, carrying the majority of the group's starfighter compliments and most of the ground forces. It should be noted that Liberty Group is not equipped for planetary invasions and is typically utilized for supporting existing installations. Liberty Group is part of the Republic's 5th Fleet which places it under the direct command of Anakin Skywalker, Kento Marek's former Master.

The image above is an archive image of the Liberty prior to receiving a New Republic livery. Liberty retains most of its old Imperial grey but the edges of her arrow hull have been painted forest green and the Republic Starbird (also in forest green) adorns both aft corners of the top hull and on the front of the bridge. The top halves of Liberty's bridge deflector shield spheres are similarly green colored along with certain levels of Liberty's "hump" (the elevated section at midship and aft where the bridge tower sits). Her underside has a large forest green stripe running from her forward tip, down the center, all the way to aft, encircling her forward and ventral hangars and leaving her lower deflector shield generator dome alone.
