“Well I guess that’s that over with.” You stand up, feeling pretty pleased with yourself, and turn to face your partner. She faces you with an irritable look.

“Finally,” she groans at you. “I can’t believe it took you so long to do something that simple.”

“I don’t see you doing any better,” you say, sniffing and walking away. “Come on, let’s head to the next job.”

“Fine,” she sighs, and you hear her scuttling footsteps behind you as you follow the narrow corridors through the centre.

“It’s just that something bothers me about this place,” she says. You turn and see that she’s still glancing around, eyes fixed on the spitting holes all around.

“It’s only derelict,” you reply. “Nothing unusual about it. There are thousands of districts like this across the ship.”

“I guess,” she sighs. “Just be careful.”

“You know, most of what you hear about these places is just the old rumour mill turning,” you say, dismissively. “No haunting, no weird goings on. Nothing.”

“Exactly,” she says. “Nothing. That’s the problem.”

“What’s wrong with nothing?” You reply to her. “I like the peace and quiet.”

“It’s not just quiet.” She draws herself close to you. “It’s closer to dead.”

You pick up your walking pace. Now that she mentions it, the corridor does feel a little claustrophobic…

“Come on, let’s just keep going.” Now you can hear the rushing sound from behind. Now you know you’ve been here too long.

“It’s not dead,” she says, shaking and running alongside you. “It’s alive.”
