I have videos up on youtube of me working, would that work? Sometimes seeing someone do something is an easier way to learn! [link]

you can always send me a note here or email me at batchix at yahoo :3
Part of learning is messing up. Some of the best work I've done came about because I messed something up and had to improvise. Don't be afraid of messing up. My rule is "Is this going to burn the house down?" "No." "is this going to potentially maim me?" "No." "Good enough, let's go."

Such a wonderful display of detail. Every time I try to add detail I dent the body too much.

what kind of clay are you using?

white Air dry clay.
I also tried looking up quicker drying methods for it. But to no prevail.

Like Das or La Doll? Is it a stone clay or a paperclay? If it's a paperclay I'd recommend letting it dry and then using sand paper and speedball lino cutter to cut back in and make the detail. That's how I do the details on my dolls. If it's stone clay then... I'm not sure. It's usually too hard to sand.

I am not sure myself. It is left over air dry clay from school supplies.
When I started using the hair dryer to help the drying pace. it started cracking.
Its like a oily texture with this clay

try sanding it after it's dry maybe? I'm not sure... i use mostly paperclay or polymer clays or apoxie sculpt.

No, it's hard, but not necessarily like plastic... it still feels a bit like a clay. You might try Super Sculpey sometime. Or Fimo. Fimo comes in small blocks so it's a little less of a commitment to buy. :3

May I ask, is the clay used as a base for the resin to be brushed upon or is it used as a mould? That's where I'm getting confused!!

batchix In reply to luv4die [2009-09-28 18:34:11 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it's hard to get here tho. I might try it sometime, but for casting purposes I prefer paperclay because it's easy to get and easy to sand. :3

Thankyouuuuu so much for your help. Not very many artists like to share their secrets. perhaps now i can start my journey on creating dolls. I thought about making BJDs. Does Paperclay hold up to the tension in the string & movement?
π: 0 β©: 1
batchix In reply to PaperCutPhantom [2009-01-07 19:05:54 +0000 UTC]
Paperclay is good for a prototype you intend to cast. It won't hold up if you intend to play with your doll at all. You can get a harder type of paper clay to make the inner cores with if you want to make a doll out of paperclay, but it's nearly impossible to sand. XD
[link] you can see the entire process of me making this doll here.
If you want to make a doll without casting it, I suggest using either apoxy sculpt or super sculpey to make the doll. it's still not as strong and sturdy as resin but it's stronger than the paperclay. :3

He's looking fab, but remember WIP belong in scraps. Just FYI before a mod comes and moves them.

batchix In reply to ohnojaylo [2008-08-21 00:18:27 +0000 UTC]
I left notes on all of them that they'll be moved when I get done with the project... and so far no one's moved them(I did that with Nan Sook and all her WIPs are in the scraps now). I had it happen before I put the note on there, but not after. what I'll probably do is move the rest to scraps every time I update.
