This piece of artwork has been submitted for consideration for the We'Moon calendar for 2011. The theme was Up Rising, about how we rise above our trials, how we manage, and what we bring with us.I had the idea for this painting in November, but guilt about how I needed to attend to my commissioned work kept me from working on it until around August 1st, when I realized that I had had this GREAT idea and I wasn't going to let it go. Never mind that the deadline was SEPTEMBER 1st...
Suffice to say, it got done. Below me are the trials I'm trying to overcome: my husband's tour in Afghanistan, my sister's lung cancer, etc. On the robe (which I have been double-dared to make in the next year) are patches representing everyone who has helped me, all through my life. What I bring me as I walk into the bleak and uncertain future is the sunny summer landscape in my mind (which is incidentally the view from the labyrinth at Four Quarters Farm.) the cloak I wear casts off its black mournful feathers in favor of brilliant white. I overcome.

I have the We'Moon calendar, which is where I saw this picture for the first time. I turned the page and saw this picture and immediately burst into tears. I have just decided to get a divorce. She seems a vision of a brave woman who has walked through the fire and emerged from the otherside with gifts of wisdom. Thanks.
