Great Labyrinth fanart! I really love this movie... Such a pitty that Henson won't make another one ever again.

well, I will be waiting eagerly.... as many others.... once the labyrinthClub faves your pic.. you will have all the labyrinth fans at your feet...I am afraid...
well the Labyrinth is a movie that has aged well, (ok, I admit that the dancing sequences-but the ballroom- are quite awkward nowadays)

You again! Your awesome inking style, and now, Labyrinth fanart? Dude. Instafave and many many brownie points to you.
I totally agree with you on the characters there too. (I really don't need to say that I am a major fan of the movie generally.) Because Bowie is... impossibly ambiguous dark sexiness, and young Jennifer Connelly in that is just... luminous. Perfectly on the cusp of womanhood. And, same with me, I fell in love with her then, and she remains beauty, to me.
Jim Henson, you are sorely missed.
And you... are going on my watch.

Cool tribute, Andy!! In all the years I've known you, I never realized you were such a fan of Jim Henson, at least beyond the affection that every kid from our generation has from watching The Muppet Show when it was originally on TV.
Which reminds me... if I had to pick a #1 favorite Henson movie, it would be the original "The Muppet Movie". Just because I have fond memories of seeing it in the theater with my parents and sister when we were little, and because it sums up everything that Jim Henson was all about in my mind.
Between his fantasy films, though... personally I always liked the Dark Crystal better, though I agree it has that one fatal flaw - the Gelflings are tough to connect with. Oh yeah, and the fact that Augrah, cool as she looks, and despite the fact that she pulls her own eye out... is such an obvious Yoda rip-off. In terms of concept, at least. And anyone who says she isn't - is kidding themselves. But those are minor quibbles for me, and the mind-blowing coolness of the Mystics, Skeksies, and Garthims kinda makes up for all those problems in my book.
But back to your Laberynth illo! You really captured the young Jennifer Connelly. And this pic does the best thing a tribute illustraton can do - it makes me want to watch that movie again. I have to admit I only saw it once or maybe twice as a kid, and have only vague memories of it (so maybe it's unfair to say I prefer the Dark Crystal, which I saw so many times and remember so well?)
Anyway, great illo. I would love to see you take a swing at coloring it. For such a magical story, a nice dose of playful color would serve it well.

Ever since I was conscious enough to know what a television was, I was a Sesame Street addict. The Muppet Show was HUGE to me as well. And the movies, even though they really lost their soul after a while, still stand heads-and-shoulders over pretty much any kids' movie made since 1990. Jim Henson is ostensibly my Godfather.
I love the Muppet Movie; there's a purity of spirit that is has that makes it timeless. But my FAVORITE one is The Great Muppet Caper, for its naughty sense of humor; it really captures PURE Henson to me.
I can forgive Augrah being a Yoda riff, since it's all Henson, and it's all good.
You really should bust out Labyrinth again. It ages well. It was the beginning of my long-standing fascination with Jennifer Connelly. And Bowie! The only flaw is the musical numbers (not all of which are bad, but I get a mental disconnect every time a musical number comes into a movie that isn't a MUSICAL).
Color... you know, I'm always telling myself I'm going to do it sometime. I don't like this particular piece enough to pursue it any further, but maybe next time...

Jim Henson is full of win and awesome. loved the Dark Crystal too.
i think this looks great. the fact Sarah's so simple helps her stand out from Jareth and the background i think.
and yes, it is pretty hard to say who was prettier.

Thanks! You know, I love the Dark Crystal, too; but it is SO serious. There is no levity, no lightness; it's relentlessly grim. I really like Labyrinth's use of the subtle Henson-esque comedy, and the human characters that make it just THAT MUCH better to me.

I agree. The Mystics and the Skeksis are some of the coolest puppet designs of all time. I just never could relate to the Gelflings; and since they were the MAIN CHARACTERS that you werer supposed to relate to, that kept me from fully engaging with it.
But it's still a brilliant movie, regardless.
I'm a hopeless Henson junkie; it doesn't matter what it is; if Jim touched it, I love it.
