Kamina was always sort of a two-dimensional character to me until later on in the series. He was loud, had strong beliefs and little to no actual manners. However, he did have an excellent attitude, and his will was inspiring all in and of itself. A back that would never break and a man who fought for his vision until the end.

It wasn't until a bit after his death that we all learned the truth; that it was he who relied on Simon, rather than Simon exclusively relying on Kamina. Kamina never said it aloud, never made it blatantly obvious, never did anything to directly indicate his plan, but he knew all along what Simon would do. If you need evidence of that just watch Episode 26.
