Description Long medieval war flail and spiked "morningstar" (It's only a huge show-off fantasy weapon. Real historical morningstar flails are much smaller and slender objects.)

Thanks for the faves. I have seen pictures of similar slavic "flail weights" and there is few found also in Finland.
Maybe left after the cossacks, because they were raiding this country in the end of Great Northern War. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland_…

I kinda like that beautiful geometrical shape of slavic mace and flailheads. users.stlcc.edu/mfuller/slavic… Western style spike balls look quite plain compared to that shape made from small pyramids and knots etc.

Excellent morningstar flail, with a 3-headed companion for fun. Most of the existing historical models don't have much in the way of chain length, so your version looks great by comparison. I am impressed by your ability ro insert the spikes into the head. I haven't been impressed by most replica flails; I would by this one at Faire. Β

Glad to heart that you liked them and thanks also for adding this and my bronze mace to your favourites.

Morningstar head is actually made from cast iron ball what i found from junkyard. I just drilled a lot of holes for that and the spikes are kind like bolts what i tighten to it's holes when the ball was heated almost red hot. When the ball cooled down it's also shrinked a little bit and all the parts fit together now very tightly.

And now I know the secret to making an iron ball filled with spikes.

Slight correction.
A morningstar has no chain.
A morningstar is a large mace of German make.
A flail is what you have, it goes by no other correct name.

I know it, but most of the people call all kind of spiked flails and maces very often "morningstars".
There is not so many weapon experts, that i can use some strange historical names, like "holy water sprinkler" or something like that.

Authentic morgensterns look more like this.. [link]

Yeah, Morgensterns ARE more like that.
Flails are with chains.
Morningstar and mace differ slightly.

ooo, thank you, did not know like making the thorns of the ball, does not happen form to me to do them in the forge, thanks for the answer. I like very much your works, are tuna

"Thorns" are really the only thing what isn't welded in that ball. I shaped them first like some kind of bolts and i drill also some holes in that ball and turn spikes in those holes when ball was heated red hot in my forge.

When spike-ball cool down a little bit later, all the parts are so tight together like it was made from one piece of metal.

Ok. It's not very easy to explain, but i made those when i find first some strange steel balls from local junkyard. (They are old ball bearings i think.)
Next i forged some spikes, chain links and other metal parts from steel and only welded all the parts together.

That was almost five years ago and i have not made more flails and maces after that. I have at least three big steel balls left in my workshop, so maybe i can made new ball-weapons in next winter or summer.
