Description Google AJAX Translate API is no longer a free service, so this script will no longer work.
It was brought to my attention that there already is a script that does a similar thing. It's TransW00T by dancewiththesky
So whoever find this interesting, might as well check that script also.

Intro
I believe that language shouldn't be a barrier for art sharing.
Have you ever found yourself staring at some foreign language comment here on dA, having no clue what it says, but desperately trying to figure it out?
Well, have no fear sayWhat is here to chase your worries away!
...kind of...

What's this?
It's just a little something that crossed my mind while I was commenting on a deviation by GoranCaBuhOcTojuh .
It's a greaseMonkey script that adds a small translate button on each comment here on deviantART. It uses the Google Ajax Language API to translate the comment from number of different languages to English (google does cross-translation, but this script currently translates only to English). It's not perfect, but it'll help you understand at least what the comment is generally all about. Neat.

Ok I want to try it. How do I install it?
In order to use it, you must be using Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox , and you must have the Greasemonkey extension installed.
Next, click the
INSTALL SCRIPT to install the script and a greaseMonkey script installation window will open. To install the script press the "Install" button.
A little translate button will be added on each comment, right above the "reply" button. And that's it. You're ready to go.

How do I use it?
It cannot be simpler. You click the button, wait for the google server to respond, and the translation will magically appear where the old comment was. If you want to see the old comment again, just press the button again.

I hope you'll find this little script useful.
Cheers.

To do
It doesn't work in messageCenter
Implement the same functionality for journals, news etc.
Implement other languages than English.
Implement the live translation of the comment that you're writing to other languages

Yeah, each Firefox version breaks many of the GM scripts, so I stopped writing new scripts and updating old ones. Sorry.

Would it work if I use Chrome, and have the TamperMonkey add-on?

I've featured this as Daily Feature on the front page of #deviantART-Related

#deviantART-Related is the unofficial group for the dA related gallery, and our Daily Feature is a private initiative to serve as an alternative to DDs while there's no GM for the gallery

We featured your piece for today with the following description;
dA is home to deviants all over the world, many of whom want to speak their own language on dA. On the other hand mutual understanding is vital for the community. sayWhat? by #ArtBIT solves this problem by translating foreign language comments to English, making them accessible to anyone. The script is a few years old but still works like a charm.

Thanks so much!

I have to test these scripts and see if they need tweaking... I haven't used Firefox in a while...

Google chrome automatically asks if you want a page translated to English, it this similar to that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtBIT In reply to catholicchick [2010-08-22 17:14:50 +0000 UTC]

Kind of like that yeah, except that this is per comment translation.
For you see, sometimes, the whole page could be in English, but only a comment or two would be in some foreign language, which would trick Google Chrome into thinking that the whole page was actually in English, since more than 95% of text is in English, while with this script you could target and translate only the non-english comments in question.

hmmm... it seems to get confused if there are multiple languages in a post. Ah well, that's pretty unlikely to happen & is probably the translator's fault

it would be sweet if you could convert the artist comments otherwise i love this script! it rocks, it does all the hard work like trying to figure out what language they are actually typing. seriously very nice work, something like this should actually be incorporated into DA its self.

This is so better than TransW00T! Great job; I like how it also translates signatures.

One note though, you've misspelled powered as powerd in the "powered by Google" phrase so I had to go into the script to correct it.

Bugs!

a) Sometimes the button covers the avatar.
b) It strips new lines..
c) It strips links..
d) It strips basically everything that's not text
e) Maybe make it so that the title of the button says "Translate", "unTranslate", etc, rather than the comment number (the tooltip that is..)

Otherwise, this is an amazing, and very useful! Good job!!

Heh, thanks for the report:

a) you're prolly using some script that alters the original deviantART CSS, like Stylish or deviantTIDY or something...
b,c,d) blame google API, I will try to think of something to bypass this limitation...
e) updated

The Transw00t translates partial comments, and yours... I can't wait for more!
