Description Finland's involvement during WW2 was limited. On November 30th 1939, during what is now known as the Winter War, the Soviet Union invaded the land it previously owned, resulting in heavy casualties on their side compared to the relatively low casualties on the Finnish side. (25,904 killed or missing, 43,557 wounded for Finland, 126,875 dead or missing, 188,671 wounded for the Red Army)

Despite being greatly outnumbered and lacking both armor and air support, Finland's army managed to push back the massive, but badly equipped and commanded Soviet army. The Moscow Peace Treaty was finally signed, putting an end to the slaughter and resulting in Finland giving away 11% of its territory and 30% of its economic assets while keeping its independance.

All in all, Finland kicked ass.

Unfortunately what is usually forgotten is that the Finns also fought the "Continuation" and "Lappland" wars also during WWII. The Continuation war was the part of the part the Finns fought on the Germans side as part of the invasion of Russia and the Lapland war was with the Germans when they were leaving ruining the north of Finland in the Process.

The Germans told the Finns that they had to get rid of all the Jewish soldiers in their army, and they said that that wasn't going to happen.

It's true that your reference photo is from the Continuation War 1941-44. However, I've found several accounts and photos of Finnish units using (unofficial) skull paintings in their helmets also during the Winter War.

I really like how you've managed to capture the feeling of the time on the soldiers faces. They actually look like very basic Fins.

Also thank god for Stalin to be so paranoid as to murder all his able officers so that the remaining ones were unable to mount a very succesful attack against Finland. The remaining officers who were loyal to Stalin fought by his orders and basically made a frontal assault over and over again in poor conditions.

Its remarkable how a country like this could actually defend itself so well. If the countries near Finland (LAtvia , Estonia , Lithuania , Poland),whould have joined then there would have been a chance to leaave the soviet invasion at a halt , but the unity was never made, because Lithuania and Poland were having serious arguments about who will have territory of Vilnius , both countries had a common past there .
Now it belongs to Lithuania. Oh, and btw the way good job

pro10 In reply to Viktorio [2010-09-01 02:08:45 +0000 UTC]

why the hell would you want that? if that happened, there wouldnt be a soviet union to fight nazi germany.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Salva-Toori In reply to pro10 [2011-09-24 19:59:15 +0000 UTC]

So the Soviets should have been given free reign to invade countries? No chance to fight back? That's an interestingly disturbing viewpoint.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

pvttost [2010-06-07 16:52:39 +0000 UTC]

The soviets had it comming. From the minute it had started. The fins were the REAL tough guys. The finns had 30 light tanks and all of them were destroyed. The soviet army there was 25% of then the active military personel of the USSR (they had 700-790 tanks and hundreds of bombers and fighters ships and cannons and such).
There was one time when 16 Finnish soldiers with 2 machine guns had invaded a soviet camp and started firing. The soviets panicked and attacked a nearby soviet camp resulting in pure destrucktion. The Finnish guys managed to escape unharmed with some bullets for the machine guns missing.
Finland kicked major ass.

Great work! Like always, I see you have done your background research for the equipment as well, like German WW1 m/16 helmet and even the unofficial insignia for the certain Light Infantry Detachment. Nothing to nitpick with the illustration

I too am little confused about the mention of "limited involvement" though, Finland fought three separate wars during 1939-45; first the Winter War alone against the Soviets, then the Continuation War together with the Germans against the Soviets (to retake the lost territories and to repel the expected Soviet aggression) and then finally the Lapland War, where Finns had to drive away the German troops from Northern Finland. Whole deal cost us over 90,000 killed. I'm sure Germany's war in the Eastern Front would have been very different without Finnish involvement against the Soviet Union in 1941-44.
This period is recalled here often. After all, Finland was the only country fighting together with the Germany that was never occupied, and the peace has been always seen as injustified. The land was lost after the fighting and Finland had to pay huge war reparations to the Soviets, and was the only country in the world that did so.
