Description First of all thank you all who commented/favourited my last piece Rock Bridges I'm very happy that some of you liked visiting that part of my mind.

Now I have a one-week vacation from school starting now and to celebrate this I sat down and painted this. I was listening to Rez:gamers guide to-soundtrack twice so I think it's pretty accurate to say that I painted this in 2hrs. There are still heaps of detail that I somehow managed to squeeze in everywhere. (Old bad habits die hard )

This city is sort of an ideal version of the real world. I wanted to create the sense of real calmness. To visit there requires a slow boat ride. It's another place to escape to from work and dark days. Hope you can use it as a window like I did. Thank you again. You all rock

Have you ever read the book "The War of the Flowers" by Tad Williams? It's a great fantasy read, and the city you've drawn in this picture is exactly how I envisioned the city in the book! Great atmosphere, I love the twinkly little lights of the buildings in the foreground.

To be honest, I've never been that interested in fantasy or sci-fi books or art even. I know it's weird but fundamentally even the terms fantasy or sci-fi seem a bit unpleasant to me because it seems like I have to design in a certain way if I set out to do a fantasy or sci-fi painting. I don't think about doing either but sometimes end up doing both.

I hope I can get excited about fantasy books someday because really good books are so hard to find.

Ah yes, I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes if you approach a picture with "this is going to be a fantasy piece" in your head you end up creating a picture that's very stereotypical of the fantasy genre. That doesn't leave you to push the boundaries of your imagination because you have a fixed image of what is fantasy and what isn't, which is obviously the wrong thing to do.

There are very good fantasy books out there. You just have to dedicate a couple of hours to some browsing through Amazon.

I just had an interesting discussion about this with my boyfriend. I came to the conclusion that if I can somehow relate to the characters and there's some link to real world then I'm more likely to be interested in the story. Like Longest Journey. I think the biggest reasons why that game pulled me in with it's story that it was about art student with real life problems like deadline for school work. Then when all the "magical" stuff started happening it felt more special because the player wasn't used to it at that point. I think it's one of the reasons why Harry Potter has such a big fan base, because the main character is easy to relate to because he has the same kind of problems like all of us.

Yeah, I completely agree. The book I mentioned earlier, "The War of the Flowers" is a bit like that...the city of Faerie comes across as a real place. It's actually a parallel universe, and follows the story of a normal human being who's pulled into this land and has no clue what the heck is going on.

This is a beautiful piece of work: it has just the right balance of urban chaos and dreamscape serenity to make it near-believeable as a concept environment. The tones in particular are worthy of mention: the way that they blend together is something special.

It's so serene, and I love how the river & boat draws my eye towards me, rather than away. Makes it more personal than if the city was "here" and the boat far away.
