Description
Here's a fun witchy boi, that helped me with thinking on the guide for EK that I'm trying to compile!
A/N I didn't mean to post this when I first did, I was going into the editing tab from stash and double-clicked accidentally, so for a while there was a portion of this bio missing.
Name: Dante Nox
Age: 25
Gender: Male (He/Him)
Allegiance: Currently Unaligned
Role: Hedge Witch, with an animal and potion alignment. Runs an unofficial familiar rescue center, as his magic draws in the abandoned or otherwise alone creatures.
Appearance: He has tan skin with a medium build, purple hair with black roots, several tattoos, a few minor magical markings, and bright icy blue eyes. His wardrobe is varied, with a focus on comfortable but heavily accessorized. He doesn't limit himself to certain colors, preferring to use them as the mood takes him. He'll usually have at least one or two critters following him or tagging along with him, and it's close to impossible to tell which is his actual conjured familiar with how everyone tunes into him.
Personality: Dante watches the world around him with mostly passive eyes. He's specific with his trust, a feat made easier since his familiars can sense intentions most of the time. In turn, the quickest way to have a good relationship with him is through his familiars. He's witty and quirky when he's truly relaxed with you, veering into dorky at times. He has a somewhat absurd understanding of ingredients and plants, which is helpful with his cultivation and selling them, but means you will learn plant knowledge when around him, whether you like it or not. Dante would rather stay in his house and the rescue building he's created than live almost anywhere else. He likes his space and distance from the towns and cities of Limbo. It lets him work in peace, and have a distinctive place within the wilderness for familiars to be drawn to.
Likes: The woods, ingredient gathering, collecting spells and potion books, seeing recovered familiars finally back at their true glory, his best friend Amarena ( Princess-Icicles ), going to night markets.
Dislikes: Goldie (somewhat, mostly annoyance), neglectful caregivers, abusive people, being in the city during the day, pumpkin flavored anything, and people with no respect for anything but themselves.
Backstory: Dante wasn't born in Limbo, nor were his parents from there. He grew up in Zyenna, though his family's line runs buried throughout all of the mid realms. His mother was a bookbinder and repair specialist, with a talent for spell books and prepared spell scrolls. His father was a talisman and sigil woodcarver, who could ward an entire home by marking just one wooden doorway. The extended family has always been long left for him, even though long life is a trait they commonly have. In their community, it was expected that you went and built a life distant from your parents or mentors, so each witch would make their own place when the time came.
Dante's childhood was filled with common mischief and curiosity, aided by the spark of magic he already had. With his teen years came further rebellion, as expected of him, but also a deeper disconnect because his father looked down on Dante's chosen path, in both magic and love. They fought on familiars the most, as a talisman can be engraved with a similar purpose, and Dante's father was stubborn on any discarded familiar obviously having failed their job.
Conjuring a familiar is a complex process, that responds in turn with whatever magic the caster holds. They're companions first and foremost, made to help in several matters. Calling on a talisman was simple, just calling forth an already determined creature to follow your exact bidding. Dante's magic has always been tied to emotions and gifted him as an empath, which came to cross with his father's practiced logical and methodical manner of magic. His mother tried to temper them, and they did have their good moments. She was on a close path to his father, but his mother always acknowledged the other forms a witch's magic could take.
Dante was 16 when he conjured his first familiar, though even then he had a rescue or two, so the mystery of his true familiar was just beginning. He already had plans for the life he'd create because he only had a few years left. In the next two years, he'd gather his resources and plans, and on the eve of his 18th birthday he set out to push them through. Limbo was his chosen place, much to his father's disappointment, but also to his mother's understanding. Magic helped build the framework in the coming months, but it can only do what the caster knows to do, and so Dante learned and adapted until his new home was made. What started as a small area for familiars that found their way to him would grow into a much larger one with his custom work throughout.
During one of the expansion projects, as there were many many ones, Dante would be found by his future bane, a little lamb familiar. While docile and sweet in appearance and the rare moments of hiding the, usually blatant, mischief, this lamb would delay his expansion heavily. Stealing tools, finding ways to high places, jumping off said high places so Dante has to drop everything and grab them, and many many more varying inconveniences would lie ahead. Dante will never admit it, nor admit to even thinking it, but it did help him out of an expansion rut and made the completed project an even sweeter victory. It helped that things got easier once he added a specialized space for the little lamb, which was completed with the "helpful" guidance of said lamb.
Dante slipped into a routine after that, though taking care of the animals and their personalities never allowed a rigid path, and settled into the role of hedge witch for the surrounding towns, and a somewhat renowned boogeyman or almost cryptid. He'd taken the assignment due to his family and he'd done it to his own perfection. So why did it feel like something was missing?
A misadventure with the little lamb would show him a puzzle piece of the answer, but he'll know there's more out there to be found. The adventure started on a sunny day, with Dante setting out with his determined scouts for ingredient gathering. The little lamb, not yet to be named as they rejected each attempt, was firm in their attendance. So off they went. It was a successful outing, and for the first two hours, everything was perfectly fine. The lamb was even helping!
And then the lamb was suddenly nowhere to be found. Dante was as confused as possible, he'd only turned away for a moment, and the lamb had slipped away without a clear trace. It took a lot to pick up a trail, and the ingredients are temporarily forgotten, but Dante was determined to know what happened. He wasn't about to accept the loss until he'd tried everything. Imagine his surprise when he found the lamb a ways away from the forest, happily curled up at the feet of a young woman painting in a field. That was the day he met Amarena, and it would change a lot. The lamb had found its new place and was given the name Goldie by Amarena. If you thought the humanoids' friendship saved Dante from Goldie's mischief, you'd be wrong.
They grew to be best friends, but Goldie is always there to happily cause a minor annoyance. Don't listen to Amarena, even if it's tempting to think that the adorable Goldie could never do anything other than be precious. Don't believe the little lamb's eyes, be strong. There are more adventures for these two besties out there, and you can bet that Goldie or another familiar is waiting in the wings to begin it.
Amarena is Princess-Icicles 's character!
