Simply because someone is fat...even if it is their fault. Should not play the blame game -- we should be working with one another to work towards getting "healthy" no matter your shirt or pant size. We won't all be the same size no matter how hard people strive towards...O.o

oh my goodness, i think too many people are going OTT here. A lot of people will feel like they need to be skinny not to an extreme level but its still pressure, that's really not needed, because most average people, who may feel the want to be much slimmer don't need to be. so yes i agree with your point, coz i dont think you meant either of the extremes of eating disorders. just your average people who feel too much pressure.

Hot by virtue of skinny isn't all it's cracked up to be. Look at Bettie Page and Marilyn Monroe. Both were fantabulously hot, but would considered "fat" by today's standard. Maybe that's why all those runway models all look perpetually pissed, cause they don't eat enough.

Teens really need to be taught to have healthy moderation and not to let popular advertising dictate their ideal body image (and not to let their self worth be hardwired to their body image) Besides, teens also need to learn that your body shape isn't the only thing that makes you physically attractive. I would dare argue that your carraige has more to do with it than your absolute build. Personally I'd take a fit roundier girl over a skinny one that has the carraige of Ragetty Anne (a rag doll cartoon character for you kiddies out there).

As to the cause of obese people, I don't think you can point to any one reason for all them. It doesn't matter if it's a physiological reason or a psychological one, it's not like they sat down and decided to be fat (well, actually I've heard of a couple of case where that actually was the case). It comes down to a sense of hopelessness in their situation or lack of will to change the situation. The unfortunate part of the whole thing is that no matter the causes, the vast majority of people paint all fat people with the lazy brush without looking at the root cause, while the fat people flip flop between being helpless to do things about their body and ignoring it because it doesn't "bother" them yet.

Capitalism and a person's weight have little to do with each other. There are many people of all builds that have a successful love life and career. Only in Hollywood does the fantasy that everybody is thin and pretty hold true. It isn't to say that sometimes pretty people have it slightly easier at times, but sometimes that "pretty" causes them trouble that the rest of us don't have to deal with.

The chances of getting fat because of illness are probably greater than you'd give credit for. Thyroid issues aren't necessarily the only thing that can cause weight gain. If an active person is mobility limited due to injury and doesn't adjust their calorie intake, they will probably gain weight. There are also a number of prescription drugs that cause weight gain, and techincally speaking OCDs and other mental illness can cause eating disorders.

ehh...partial correction....Mental illness can manifest as eating disorders.

B4GG [2010-07-03 23:46:43 +0000 UTC]

the problem here is most people who are overweight are because it's there own fault, statistically being fat because of an illness is quite rare and much rarer than overweight people would like us to believe.
There are people who range in natural healthy body weights and so a woman who is perceived large or overweight can usually just be large naturally but still healthy.
Just because it is a capitalist society never means you have to listen to the bullshit people try to popularize things with!!!
normal size is fine as long as you know yourself that you are a normal size, fuck what any other person thinks as they are gonna be pretty shallow to give a fuck what another person looks like.
I am truly sorry if some obese girl stumbles across this image and sees it as a negative thing but to be fair, if you really are big enough then maybe you should care about your image not for the shallow reason but so you don't die a decade or two before your life expectancy!

I'm sorry if I was portraying anybody as a bitch I just don't like it when somebody tries to get a much needed and valuable point out and somebody says it is less valiud as they are not in as bad as a situation or as seemingly important as someone else!!!

People don't realize. Being "skinny", or thin, is not just cosmetic. Its a healthy lifestyle, its a healthy body type. Most modern diseases are related to most people being overweight nowadays, the life expectancy for someone overweight is far less than someone of a healthy weight. And no im not talking about being a size zero, catwalk model. Im talking about having a healthy body mass index, striving to be a healthy weight is a positive thing. Accepting the fact your overweight is a negative thing. It is not all cosmetic like i said. Its not about "perfection" Its about being healthy and living a long, happy life.

Some big people can eat right to,just because your fat people think it's cause of junkfood. that's not true, you can have diseases & such that make you big even if you have every greasy thing in this world.

TakeMeToAnotherPlace In reply to amberinchains [2010-07-03 19:17:24 +0000 UTC]

If you have a medical condition that causes you to gain large amounts of weight, such as a thyroid disorder, there is medication available to help you.

Any big people who are big because they have a slow metabolism, because they eat too much, or because they eat the wrong things, this is their own fault. And it will lead to a shorter lifespan, more diseases, less mobility. That is a medical fact.

I'm sorry to say but, nowadays capitalism rules so it's more likely that you'll be successfull in your working life and/or love life if you are skinny. Though I'm not saying that you can't be happy being big. It's just that usually people are happy when either one of those things are ok.

you are skinnier than a lot of other chicks in the US... if you think you're fat, then all teenage girls really are doomed to have insecurities about their weight without fail from now on
honestly, would have seen this as a very emotional photo... if you were like 300 pounds, and still revealed your naked belly just to make a point... no matter how many people thought it disgusting. coming from a girl that is merely a little over the average weight of girls of this age group... it just doesn't portray much.

let's see... 13. so you're probably, what? 150 pounds? 160? and you think that's bad...?

B4GG In reply to AForAdultery [2010-07-03 14:55:13 +0000 UTC]

Just because this girl isn't large or over weight doesn't mean she can't make a point about being thin or skinny, she may mean the cliche size zero models who are unhealthy in their weight.
Also just to let you know you make a fair point skinny is not always beautiful, Marilyn Monroe was a size 16 but you have to remember their is always to big as you will just be as bad as those that are unhealthy but under weight!

like the picture and please people stop biting off peoples heads because they want to make a point and aren't part of the cliche majority who usually make that point
