Description
Watercolor 11x14.
This is the first time I've attempted to paint likenesses of famous people. Now that my art skills have improved I wanted to take a crack at something manageable (using high quality images from the recent past because black and white photographs make me nervous with their usually lower quality, I'm afraid it'll make blurry images). However, this project was still so time-consuming that I've only finished today! However, there's never a bad time to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of black people.
I chose Women in Government as my theme, and I picked recent history because something Black History Month means to me is that black people make history all the time. As a woman, I also felt more drawn to female black history. Additionally, I took inspiration from an assignment I was given as a child, which is to celebrate history that has happened in my lifetime that I either don't know or am not thinking about.
I chose the tulips and daisies to represent new beginnings and the forget-me-nots as a nod to not forgetting history. Also, the colors reflect the patriotic theme. All of these women are patriots who have and are serving our country.
The arrangements of the portraits represents time: Joycelyn Elders came first, then Michelle Obama, and finally the present, with Vice President Kamala Harris.
