Description A fairly quick piece, but I'm rather pleased with it. It was my birthday present to me - I've been rather stressed, and I've got a few commissions to do, but I allowed myself just a little time to draw something that didn't *have* to turn out perfectly.
Very little blending on this one- just a little on his collar and coat. It was fun to do.

I hope you like it!

Size: A little under A3
Time Taken: about 10 hours
Materials: 0.5 mechanical pencil with B lead, solid graphite pencils (8B and Aquarelle), blending stumps, plastic and kneadable erasers.

Oh, thank you, and thanks for the too, I'm glad you liked it! You've got some great portraits in your gallery, although I think it might be nice if you worked a little more texture into them sometimes; they're amazingly smooth!

You're welcome! And thank you for taking time to look at my gallery. Haha, yeah, I guess that's kind of my style I've developed, and partially due to my idealized view of the subject. With every drawing, I'm always looking to improve, so I'll definitely think about adding some more texture next time.

Alene In reply to RayPelesko [2012-09-01 08:24:34 +0000 UTC]

I find that a bit of texture in hair, clothes, background, etc really helps to bring out the smoothness of the skin in a portrait – and since you're so good at the smooth, it would be nice to have that really stand out; sometimes a bit less is more. Good luck!

Very nice rendition of Bogart, a bit prittier than he was in real life but well done. He is and always will be my favourite male actor.

Thank you. It was a very flattering photo, I think, he was quite young and didn't look as craggy as usual. Thanks for the I'm glad you like it!

Daaaang, that is amazing. The eyes are absolutely perfect, and the little hint of a smile is SO him. I adore Humphrey Bogart. There have never been, nor ever will be, any actors quite like him. You are an incredible artist! This is an instant fave.

Judging from the favourites I've got for this, quite a few of them, (I get more favourites if people like the actor, naturally, so it's a pretty good gauge! ) which is a very good thing, I think. Not enough people like the classic films! He's great fun to draw, too!
I'm glad you like it, and thanks for the !

BrandPower [2008-09-25 14:06:04 +0000 UTC]

He is damn charming.
The detail and amount of attention paid to the fabric and, well...everything...is excellent. And in full view it's overwhelming. The expression is really quite nice and all the shadows look very good.
Considering he was in his late thirties and fourties at the peak of his career (I think), he's looking pretty handsome.

Overall, a great job. Fave'd.

Thankyou, and thanks for the . I really enjoyed getting the texture on this one; it took a bit more care, since I couldn't smudge away tonal inconsistencies, but was quite relaxing, and wholly worth it.

I've always admired this guy, I don't think I can name a single movie he's been in, though I'm sure I've seen 'em, but his portrait used to be in my favorite breakfast coffee joint, which is long since out of business. He's just so cool! D:

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to LunaticStar [2008-03-02 02:46:57 +0000 UTC]

Casablanca? The African Queen? The Big Sleep? And tons more, but I don't think I'll list them
Lots of coffee places seem to have photos of classic stars in them. I suppose the trend must have started somewhere.... not that I'm complaining!

LunaticStar In reply to Alene [2008-03-02 03:51:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I've seen African Queen. >_> A really long time ago, heheh. And these old stars have a coolness new ones don't, I suppose it's because there's some really fundamental differences between Bogart, and say, Tom Cruise. Um. Class? XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to LunaticStar [2008-03-02 05:17:43 +0000 UTC]

Probably class, yes. And even if the classic stars didn't actually have class, the studio system gave it to them.
