Description Far, far too long ago, suggested that I dry a drawing of a different ethnicity. About a year ago I started this, but various things, such as homework, prevented my finishing it. Then summer came, and the air-conditioner 'set' all of the drawings in this sketchbook (our airconditioner is as good as a fixative spray, I swear). But, two nights ago, I dug it out again, to see what I could salvage, and finished this.

So, this is a Himba Tribeswoman.
The drawing is *old*, but I still like it.

Materials: Quill 110gsm sketching paper, 0.5 mechanical pencil with #B lead, #8B solid graphite pencil, blending stumps, cotton buds, tissues, plastic and kneaded erasers.
Time taken: Over the space of a year, about 12 hours.
Size: A4

Enjoy!

Very touching. More than a drawing, you created a beautiful painting in graphite. The sensitive textures, graduated shading, spatial depth and subtle lighting make this a standout piece. I hope you do many more of these.

omg! this is the best drawing i've seen in a while. Excellent shading skills i think its way tougher to draw darker skin shades than lighter ones and you've done the best job on this. well deserving.

Wow!

This is a tremendous piece. Beautiful technical details and excellent shading. But the subject.....absolutely stunning. A very great piece of work.

Perhaps consider offering this as a print.

A4 is less impressive than A3 for people generaly.
Little question: how do you scan so big drawings like A3?
With a A4scanner is not really fun

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to yf19-sama [2006-08-10 08:33:49 +0000 UTC]

I scan A3 drawings using Photoshop. I scan them in two pieces, then put both pieces in a larger document. I line them up, and use a large, soft-edged eraser brush to erase the sharp edge from the top layer, so that they merge together. Hope that made sense, and is helpful!

yf19-sama In reply to Alene [2006-08-10 11:11:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for reply, I have only one A3 drawing here and I used the same method for scanning. This mean it might be the better trick to do that A3 scanner are simply to expensive

Hi Alene! I really love this drawing! I admire all the different textures you were able to create using the tools you did. Man, I have a tough time with pencils. It's neat too how you worked on this over such a long period of time and stuck with it and finished it. Yay for finished projects!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to Kielrah [2006-08-08 09:26:25 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou! (Thanks for the too, btw) Pencil takes a bit of getting used to, but it is such a versatile medium. A lot of it is just observation and practice.
And while you may have trouble with pencils, your paintings are great!

That is absolutely amazing. You really captured her features well and I also like her hair! XD

I think it would be really awesome if you tried to draw another African person on black paper. It's quite an experience drawing on different-colored paper.

I find a lot of the coloured paper we get here is of a rather inferior quality, so I tend not to use it, but I'll definately keep it in mind!

God, why isn't this on the front page?? That is superb. The shading on the dark sckin is excellent, you don't see many drawings of black people. You really got the texture of her hair too.
