Description This picture was done over the course of two days, during which I was a live exhibit/demonstrator at the Kelmscott Agricultural Show. I chose this image for two reasons: a) I was hoping that people would know who she was (not usually the case with my usual subjects) and b) There was a lot of flat black, so I could finish the drawing in a shorter amount of time. I just managed to finish it in the two days, and did a few touchups tonight. Since it's Traditional Art Day, I thought I should upload it. I should technically be doing homwork.

The original photo is a production still from The Prestige and is a bit softer and lighter. My black & white print out came out very dark, and I liked the look, so I stuck to it.

Time Taken: 15-16 hours. I was talking to a lot of people during that time, too, so techically a bit less than that.
Materials: Quill 110gsm sketching paper, 0.5 mechanical pencil with #B lead, #8B solid graphite pencil, plastic, kneadable and electric erasers, cotton buds, blending stumps and tissues.

btw, I don't have the time. But 'me doing homework' doesn't exactly make for an interesting demonstration, more's the pity.

Thankyou! I'm not too pleased with the shawl. I hate rendering watered silk, and it didn't turn out looking like it should. It's not too bad if you ignore the fact that it should be watered silk, though.

Looks great , you've captured her core. Though did you contrast or darken it in photoshop? I think the black and white balance is tipped a little bit too much towards the black. Because you have pitch black in the background, it'll work better if some parts have brightness at 100%.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to thehiddensapphire [2007-10-22 04:32:11 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou!
I didn't do anything but merging in Photoshop, but you're quite right - there are pure white highlights in the original which turned up grey here. I've done a bit of an edit; it isn't too different - I loose detail if I increase the white balance too much- but there are a few brighter highlights.

Alene In reply to theMete0ryt [2007-10-22 04:24:57 +0000 UTC]

Hair does take a lot of patience. I make a lot of it up, only generally following the reference, because if I try to stick too close to the original photo, I go slightly crazed.
I'm glad you like it, thanks!

Thankyou! I'm very fond of using lots of black in my portraits, so when my reference came out so much darker than it should have, I wasn't complaining!
You haven't uploaded any drawings in a long time! 'Tis a pity!

roguewyndwalker [2007-10-21 17:11:31 +0000 UTC]

To be perfectly honest, while your shading and technique are fantastic and beautiful, if you hadn't told me who it was I don't think I would have known. Not that I should be critiquing you when you are obvious so much more talented that I, LOL.

Alene In reply to roguewyndwalker [2007-10-21 17:37:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, most people who actually knew the actress could recognise her at the show, so I can't have done too badly But I realise that this isn't exactly a 'usual' image of her, which is the sort of thing that tends to throw people. The ref is here [link] if you're interested.

Thanks for the !
I like to use a paper that has a little texture - I find that really smooth or really rough paper doesn't allow for such smooth blending. I build up the shades in stages, starting out really light, blending (with a cotton bud), and then adding more pencil, and blending, until I'm at the desired darkness. Then I use a tissue to smooth everything a bit more, so that the edges of all my different shades smooth into each other.
Hope that's what you wanted to know!
