Description This is the man from my last post [link]

Despite his lot in life he was surprisingly upbeat about everything. Although, he was also pretty happy that I fed him.

Hello, first of all, I want to congratulate you for your work. I am the founder of a french association that works for the homeless. And I'm looking for a visual to replace the cover design of our facebook group. Would you permit me to use it. I would credit you of course

I think what I love most about this photo is the story behind it. I love that you took the time to chat to him, get to know him and take him out for a meal. Loneliness and isolation are a huge part of homelessness that people don't stop to think about. Thank you for being a photographer with a heart. So often we get lost in the chase for that perfect picture that conveys a powerful message, and we forget to listen to that message ourselves.

Glad you like it. I have a slightly different take on homelessness than most, having been there myself, though I hadn't at the time I took this picture. Still, it's good to see someone else worrying about the plight of the poor and dispossessed. Do me a favor, and next time you see a homeless person, buy them a burger or something. If nothing else, spend a half hour talking with them. The smallest things can bring joy into the lives of those who experience so little kindness.

Perhaps he was simply happy to have someone to have a genuine conversation with. Or perhaps I'm older and more cynical/jaded now. Sadly, since then I've met more indigent people in person than I care count, and they aren't all happy. They aren't all good people. They aren't all crazy, they aren't all drug addicts, they aren't all out there of their own volition, but there are those who chose the life. There are those who are running from the law. There are those who ran from the law and were found, and since have not been able to create stable lives for themselves.
He may have been happy for the food.
He may have been happy for the conversation.
He may have been happy because he recently got liquor (he was sitting outside a liquor store).
Or I may be overly cynical and he may just be happy as you say.
We may never know. I have not seen him at that intersection in many years. Maybe I stopped looking. Maybe he found a new corner. Maybe the cops ran him out of the area. I don't know, but his presence, for sure, is missed by few but myself.

Absolutely captivating. I appreciate the positive view of the homeless. One day, I want to be a social worker to impact peoples' views on the lost and forgotten like the homeless. You do it in such a simple, but enduring way. Thank you.
