It's a fanart for the series of fantasy books "Kroniki Drugiego Kręgu" by polish writer Ewa Białołęcka (here as ~toroj ).After recently re-reading the whole series I really wanted to paint some of its characters. I chose Jagoda, a young albino mage, because I like her unique appearance. It was kind of challenging to paint... But I'm quite satisfied with the result, for now.
I think I'm finally starting to overcome my artblock. It's about time...
Speedpaint, about 5 hours of work in Painter, no direct references used.

The strongest aspect of this painting is the eyes, which gaze out at the viewer with a burning intensity and really make you engage with the character. The tones are natural and the the details in the hair and clothing are well executed.
There is a problem however in that the face looks too flat and lacks sufficient depth. This seems to be because the neck and face do not seem to share the same lighting, which makes the face appear 'stuck on'. The neck is more heavily shadowed on the left side, but the face isn't and this causes some problems.
Overall the portrait is strong enough to carry it off but I think it could be improved by revising the lighting.

I completely agree with what you said about the lighting. It's not my strong point, but I'm really trying to improve. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind.

There's a great amount of texture present in the piece, from the garments to the hair and background itself! Everything seems hinting of detail without being too in-your-face about it, meaning the viewer is less overwealmed by the piece long enough to actually analyze and appreciate it. Granted, the piece doesn't have much of an obvious emotion to define itself with, being too neutral in that regard (and my flawed opinion).
Regardless, the piece is alive with facial character and sign of effort, the eyes especially are hypnotic and almost intimidating (is that the emotion of the piece?) Which makes for a strong sense of professionalism towards the artist. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/n/n… " width="15" height="15" alt="

First off, I want to say you have a really good eye for color.I like how the blue hues of the background have infused the mage's skin, hair, and clothing. I can even pick up hints of that alizarin crimson in the shadows of the icy rocks e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="
Now onto the figure. Her features are all there and in correct placement, however it feels as though her eyes are a little too deep set and the top of the bridge of her nose is too narrow. Your composition is working; having the high horizon line as well as using your negative and positive space well, nothing looks as if it's missing.

It really means a lot to me, especially what you said about colours. I've always had problems with them, so I'm glad to know I'm finally getting better.
I wanted to make her face match the book description - she's supposed to have very narrow and dragon-like features... Well, I guess I overdid it with the nose.

Do Jagody mam stosunek ambiwalentny, ale może właśnie przez to jestem w stanie ją narysować. Dwójka faworytów (Myszka i Promień) pewnie zawsze pozostanie poza moimi możliwościami.

wowww very good... i love how you made the eyes appeal to the viewer..not just the eyes but also the shade just underneath the brow. I guess it gave more depth to her gaze...the face though looks flat..and it needs more shadow on the sides (between her hair and face) to give more depth since its uneven with the shadow under the brow.... its still a nice painting

Jest super, bo w obecnej chwili wygląda nieco strasznie, ale gdyby zmienić jej kolor oczu, włosów i cery byłaby ładna. Czyli jak w opisie ^^

very nice rendering of the face the eyes and shading are great
im getting a feel of some flatness though, for some reason it seems like the skull is kinda pressed, it might be part of the charecter though as i have never read that series. aside from that its really really high quality

Her stare is haunting. This is very beautiful. I love all the detail in her hair and fur collar. The hair falls very naturally, too. And only 5 hours!
